Teacher Christine Kojima wrote: "If I am in town at that time, I will be there. We are in the process of selling a home in Tahoe and need to take care of business. I think I will ask other former Encina teachers to join us." John Russell 61 writes: "The class of 1961 would like to challenge all of the other classes to have the most alumni at the homecoming game this year." 1961 Linda Hoganson John Russell Carol Mills Russell 1972 Lorna Cline 1973 Rett Smart Lorna Cline Kathleen Ketcherside Harlan Lau Nancy Patton Patty Russell 1974 Terri Jurich 1975 Jeff Frei (Jeff, where are all your friends?) As a further incentive to attend the Second Annual Encina Homecoming party, Encina looks like it actually has a decent football team this year. Carol Markell 78 wrote: "Did y'all happen to see that ENCINA actually beat Mira Loma (56-0) in football last nite ?? They hadn't won a football game since 1997.... I guess miracles DO happen" See the homecoming pages for details about this year's party and a description of the First homecoming party last year: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming.htm The organizer and driving force behind the homecoming party is Rett Smart 73, who can be reached at irsmart@ix.netcom.com if you have suggestions, comments or just want to help. Please RSVP me if you plan to go. If we can get a good nucleus of people to commit, that should draw in other folks. Talk this up in your class group and let's see if we can round up a big crowd of alumni at the Homecoming game this year! Let's see which class has the most school spirit... so far it's 73! FOOTBALL Linda Hoganson 61 sent me this article from the Sacramento Bee about Encina's game with Mira Loma. 9/11 Friday's Game Encina 56 Mira Loma 0 Sunday 9/12 Sacramento Bee Sports: http://www.sacbee.com/sports/news/sports16_19990912.html PREP FOCUS: Bruised egos get a boost By Joe Davidson In high school football, coaches worry about state of mind. When a team loses week after week, egos and self-esteem tend to get body-slammed just as badly as the defense. So you could imagine the anxiety Friday night of Dale Ellingsworth, Rod Massey and Max Miller, proven coaches in charge of new programs in desperate need of goodwill. Friday, they rejoiced like teenagers again, celebrating victorious openers on the road after going a combined 0-30 in 1998. Massey incorporated his power running game at River City earlier this decade and enjoyed four playoff teams. Encina presented him with the ultimate challenge: apathy and a history of losing. The Bulldogs have produced one winning record since 1980, a 6-4 playoff team in '86 under Steve Kenyon, now at Del Campo. Included in the subsequent slide was a 28-game losing streak and a change of mascots for a fresh start, from Apaches to the more politically correct Bulldogs in 1990. Massey said he has a leader to work with in tailback B.J. Mitchell. The sophomore ran for 211 yards, scored four times and also was a defensive force at linebacker against Mira Loma. Quarterback Chris Jones accounted for two touchdowns and leading linemen Chris Peguero and Taniela Inukihaanance dominated. "We may be still a year away because we're so young with seven juniors and a sophomore starting," Massey said. "But the attitude is good. It was horrible when I got here (two years ago); they had no idea what it was like to compete or win." REUNIONS The next reunions are on September 25, for the classes of 1974 and 1979. If you have siblings or friends who might not know about their class reunions, please pass along this information. The classes which plan to have reunions this year are: 1964 1969 Saturday, August 21, 1999 at Ancil Hoffman Park Alan Dankman (adankman@worldnet.att.net) 1973 Mini-reunion: August 21, 1999 Rett Smart (irsmart@ix.netcom.com) 1974 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Sacramento Red Lion Inn Bob Goosmann (Magusbob@hotmail.com) 1979 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Hilton off Arden Way Laura Graff Allred (pacwest@foothill.net) Great Reunions: info@greatreunions.com 1984 1989 Saturday, August 28, 1999 at Howe Park Center Janice Barnes (jabarnes@dttus.com) 1994 Candy Mleczko (candym229@hotmail.com) GROUPS As the manager of all the Encina class mailing lists, I read all the posts and it's usually very interesting to "sit" in on some of the "conversations". If you have friends in other classes and would like to belong to other class mailing lists, let me know. I think most folks know quite a few people in the classes above and below them and would probably find the posts interesting. HURRICANE FLOYD Here's a report from Ben Franklin 73 in Durham, North Carolina: "We seem to have survived Hurricane Floyd. Power didn't even go off here. I heard a tree fall in the night, but so far I haven't found it, so it must have been a small one. The airport (about 6 miles from here) reported over 6 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. It's raining and the trees are still waving in the wind, but that doesn't look like it will last much longer. We're off work today. They shut down our network last night and told us to stay home today. School is out, too. The next county to the east, Wake County, has 100K people without power. Some areas of NC got 15 inches of rain. 4 people (unconfirmed) have been killed so far. There's a lot of flooding to the east of here." Any other alumni affected by Floyd? Encina has quite a few folks on the east coast... NEWSPAPERS Kari Reser 84 sent me a stack of newspapers for the 1981 and 1982 school years. I've added these to the Encina website at: http://www.encinahighschool.com/newspapers/class1981/index.htm http://www.encinahighschool.com/newspapers/class1982/index.htm REGISTRATION INFORMATION Kari Reser 84 also sent me the Registration Information guide for the 1981 schoolyear. It was really interesting to look back at the course descriptions and graduation requirements: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class81/registration.htm CLASS OF 1983 And finally, Kari Reser 84 sent me the program for the class of 1983's graduation: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class83/graduation.htm CLASS OF 1972 Co-webmaster Kerry Shearer 72 has added the 25th reunion memory book to the 72 homepage. It was fun to look at these pictures as I remember quite a few of these folks who were a year ahead of me. WHO IS IT? The 74 classmate in the mystery picture attached to last week's update was Robin Reade 74. Our families lived two houses apart on Gannon Drive in olden days. ANNOUNCEMENTS Carol Markell 78 had a son James on May 30, 1999. Well, this is a bit premature, but both Tracey Harper 78 and Llssa Miller 78 are expecting their first child, just days apart. Lissa on the 15th and Tracey on the 20th. Any news? SIBLINGS This was a great week for siblings! ALUMNI SEARCH 1983 Tiffany Powell 1984 Nick Alexander INTERNET I was disappointed that I didn't hear from anyone about buying cars on the internet. I'll let you know how our experience turns out. Fortune magazine had an article called "The Young and the Loaded", the richest Americans under 40: http://www.pathfinder.com/fortune/forty/ric.html Most of these folks made their money in the internet boom. There was a very interesting accompanying article called "Valley of the Dollars" about life in Silicon Valley: http://www.pathfinder.com/fortune/forty/wir.html Here's the beginning of the article to pique your interest: "In early July, before the heat wave enveloped my hometown of New York City, I set out for San Francisco to spend the summer exploring how big money has changed life for Internet people there and in Silicon Valley. I was supposed to concentrate on people under 40, for the most part, who have worked for Internet companies and have made a few million dollars in the past couple of years. Not hundreds of millions, just a few. "The middle class," my editors joked. I figured it would be fun, shooting the breeze with people my own age, people who--according to the hype--love their work, love their lives. They'd hit the jackpot. I'd find out what makes them tick. Sounded great. Then I got there and got kind of depressed. It wasn't that the people I met didn't embody all the qualities I thought they would. They did. They were ambitious, affable, and polite. I liked most of them. But something gnawed at me. Internet wealth has given hundreds of lucky, hard-working people the chance to forget about their bills and live it up a little. But it has also created a community where grossly skewed expectations, measured in terms of dollars, define personal success. Inner peace isn't free in this town. People with money, ooze self-esteem. People without it have a panicked look in their eyes. Intangible benefits--having a fun job, creating exciting technology--don't stand on their own anymore, no matter how often people say, "It's not about the money." (And they say that a lot.) It's all about the money. I wish I could write a story that just celebrated the spirit of the place at its best: ultraconfident, fast-thinking, energized, optimistic. But much of the time Silicon Valley didn't feel that way to me. Often it felt desperate, silly, overcaffeinated, full of doubt." As someone who has worked in Silicon Valley for three startup companies, this article was a interesting perspective on life in the Valley of the Dollars. WEBSITE I've decided that the Encina website will accept contributions to offset it's expenses. Unfortunately, since I run the website as a sole proprietorship and not a non-profit organization, these contributions are not tax deductible. As I've said before, the major repeatable expense is the $35/year annual registration fee. And I would like to compensate our domain host ConnectCorp $25/month if folks donate enough money. This works out to $335/year. If you would like to help support the Encina website, send a check to: Harlan Lau 2764 Doverton Square Mountain View, CA 94040 Depending on the number and amount of the contributions I receive, I will acknowledge contributions in the Encina Update with a little "this week's update is sponsored by x" message and list your name on a sponsors page. Donations from reunion committees are especially welcome.
