Encina Update (graduation/bios/jubilee/reunions/67/73/fame/2nd gen/siblings/directory/calendar/teachers/cull/kids/insiders/search/store/amazon.com/books/whatsnew) Date:Wed, 2 Jun 1999 11:06:05 -0700 ENCINA ALUMNI, The Update is a day early this week because of the graduation news. I was very sad that no one submitted any funny stories about Encina teachers or staff... GRADUATION Nina Shoma 99, Class of 1999 President writes: I would like to announce the graduation of the Class of 1999, June 3, 1999-Memorial Auditorium (Down Town Sacramento)- at 7pm. On behalf of the senior class at Encina I would like to send a special thanks to all alumni that attended our 40th Anniversary Luncheon back in December, and took part in any Encina activities this year. I have to say this has been a very successful year for Encina, and the Class of 1999, and I am very proud of this. Many things would not have been made possible this year if was not for many supportive staff members and hard working students. It's hard to believe that the school year is already coming to an end...and a week from today I will be an alumnus of Encina. I am sure many of you can relate. I apologize for the short notice of the graduation if you didn't already know about it! BIOS Some of you wonder why you are receiving the bios of your classmates in the mail. A while back I started forwarding bios which I received to the appropriate class mailing list. That is, a 76 bio would be forwarded to everyone on the 76 mailing list. There's a box on the bio form which asks whether it is okay to email the bio to your fellow classmates. I forward the bio if "email bio is yes". I do this since I thought you would be interested in what your classmates are up to. And to encourage you to submit your own bio. Especially those of you with reunions this fall! JUBILEE The Sacramento Jazz Jubilee was this past weekend. I went with my family on Sunday and attended performances by Encina alumni Mike Pittsley 71 and Tom Phillips 65. The first was the Jim Cullum Jazz Band starting Mike Pittsley 71 on the trombone. I saw them outdoors at the Grove at the Radisson Hotel. The weather was mild and breezy and cool but their performance was HOT. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band performs regularly at the Landing in San Antonio. There is a Jazz Performance Documentary Series called "Riverwalk, Live from The Landing" which is broadcast on over 200 PBS stations. Riverwalk is produced by Pacific Vista and Jim Cullum for Texas Public Radio. See http://www.riverwalk.org/ for details. Here is Mike's bio from the website: MIKE PITTSLEY, trombonist. The Sacramento native, who joined the band in 1978, took a leave in 1983 to freelance and lead his own band before rejoining the Cullum band in 1988. Pittsley has performed in musical theater orchestras in California and upon occasion is a traditional jazz educator at the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society's Trad Jazz Band Camp. Mike plays an Edwards tenor trombone with a 9177CF yellow brass bell and tuning slide, a .500 bore nickle-silver hand slide and an open leadpipe. Mike names Abram "Abe" Lincoln as his primary influence and considers Abe to be the greatest hot jazz trombonist of all time. Mike holds a commercial airplane and helicopter pilot's license and enjoys flying whenever he can. Sunday evening we watched Shelley Burns and Avalon Swing perform at the Crest Theatre. The act features vocalist Shelley Burns and Tom Phillips 65 on the guitar. The set was a salute to Cole Porter which we enjoyed very much. Shelley and Tom bantered with each other and the audience really got into the performance. As many of you know, Tom Phillips 65 is married to my wife's cousin Jan Arai. They are one of the few family members without a PC or email. I've been working on them and they've finally broken down and promised to buy a PC next year. I took a few pictures at the Jubilee which I'll add to the website. CLASS OF 1979 Dan Tuning writes: I wanted to see if anyone was organizing a reunion party during the day at a park for softball and kids, spouses and significant others. I was also interested seeing if anyone was doing say like a golf scramble? I might be willing to assist in organizing something like this if there was some interest. I think a best ball golf scramble tournament might be a bunch of fun. It could be a good little bonding exercise and an opportunity mix and play say like the day or evening before the reunion. A best ball format can keep the frustration level down and the spirits higher for those that only occasionally "hack." The team concept and some prized are also hecka fun! If there's enough interest and its gonna be attempted, an early shot at reserving a course is highly suggested. I'm gonna talk to a few from the class and if there is interest perhaps I can get a signup sheet going. Drop me an e-mail DETCPA1@aol.com or give me a call at (707)745-3171. REUNIONS I didn't hear from anyone last week so I'm repeating my request... I would like to add a reunion planning page to the website as a guide to future reunion organizers who don't know where to start. A checklist of things to do, which things need to be done earliest, a list of good places to have the reunion, that sort of thing. Jot down your thoughts and send them to me. I'm sure some of you reunion organizers have lots of advice to share. The classes which plan to have reunions this year are: 1964 1969 Alan Dankman (adankman@worldnet.att.net) 1973 Mini-reunion: Rett Smart (irsmart@ix.netcom.com) *** NEW *** 1974 Bob Goosmann (Magusbob@hotmail.com) 1979 Laura Graff Allred (pacwest@foothill.net) Great Reunions: info@greatreunions.com 1984 1989 Janice Barnes (jabarnes@dttus.com) 1994 Candy Mleczko (candym229@hotmail.com) CLASS OF 67 Lora Saunders 67 wrote: "I noticed when you list the "missing" for Class of '67, there are only 2 names. In the reunion "memory" book I sent you, that you scanned in for our class website (thank you again for that) we have listed about 1/2 the class, or a couple of hundred missing. They are "missing" if the last time we tried to contact them in 1997, mail came back. If you could, please direct our class to read the memory book at the website and maybe we'll be able to find some more of those missing. I know it is obviously too lengthy to put them all in your letter." Please see the 67 missing list at: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class67/reunion30/images/page9.jpg and write if you know the whereabouts of any of these folks. CLASS OF 1973 Rett Smart says five years between reunions is too long. Rett is organizing a class of 73 mini reunion this fall modelled along the lines of the Grads Only Night get together last year. That is, very casual. Please fill out the Mini reunion survey and indicate to Rett which date in August is best for you: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class73/minireunion/reunion_form.htm HALL OF FAME Tim Heintz 79 sent in his interesting bio: homepage: http://www.timheintz.com Occupation: Musician, Composer Bio: In 1980, I moved to So. Calif. to pursue my music career. I'm happy to say it's been quite successful. From 86-93 I toured as a keyboardist with many artists, including Michael McDonald, Chaka Khan, Boz Scaggs, and John Tesh. I also released 5 albums of my own, and had some success as an instrumental jazz artist. Nowdays, I spend my working time in my studio writing and playing for records, commercials, TV shows and film. I composed parts of the film scores for "Enemy of the State" and "Deep Blue Sea" (due out 8/99), and have recorded with artists including George Benson, Al Jarreau, Dionne Farris, Robbie Nevil, and John Tesh (quite the name-dropper, aren't I!!!). But most important, I married in 1995, and my wife Sharon (ex-Rio Americano!!!) and I have produced 3 little girls--so that's what really keeps us busy. Trivia: I'm playing with George Martin and a couple Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl this Summer!! Friends: Bill Baumgart (still keep in touch--he's a record producer in Nashville), Dennis Gervin, Bryan Hanson, Eric Landers (Lost touch with them), Jim Meredith (still keep in touch) SECOND GENERATION Carrie Bennett 94's uncles Ronald Drake 67 and Steven Drake 68 both graduated from Encina, although her mother Beth Drake Bennett 76 graduated from Norte Del Rio. Sadly, Beth writes that her brothers Ronald and Steven have passed away. Beth would be glad to answer any questions about her brothers Ronald and Steven that friends might have. You can contact Beth at beth_b11@hotmail.com SIBLINGS Tim Heintz 79 wrote: Stan Heintz 71 Jan Heintz 76 Tim Heintz 79 Lisa Kroll 82 wrote: Keneen Kroll 76 Lisa Kroll 82 Shavonne Kroll (attended Encina but graduated from El Camino) DIRECTORY The directory grew substantially this week due to the contributions of a few gregarious alumni. CALENDAR I've updated the Encina Calendar so it contains the Reunions scheduled for this fall along with the Homecoming game. Anything else which should be on the calendar? TEACHERS Heddy Crowder writes that Coach Hibbard is still teaching at Encina. Diane Schoenborn 73 wrote that Bob Trathen's wife is in Assistance League of Sacramento (ALS) with her husband Mike Kelly 73's mother. Bob Trathen build cabinets, etc for the ALS thrift shop. Lori Bee 74 wrote: I don't have any funny stories about Coach Gonzales but have just recently seen him. Our three girls play club volleyball and just had their team pictures taken by him. I don't know if he is still teaching but he definitely has a very lucrative business in photography. ALLEN CULL Allen Cull 74 has an interesting homepage www.acull.com where he describes his experiences as a member of the support staff in the US Antartic Research Program from 1978 to 1986. INTERNET AND KIDS Craig Peterson 78 wrote me: "I just thought you'd like to know that I came across these two internet companies in the past week or two and both are family companies that filter out all pornography, hate sites, etc... I've already ordered one disc from each of them and will use the first one to get to me. You may want to pass this along so everyone that is interested can go to the sites and read about them. Here they are: www.familyconnect.com www.mbusa.net Both of these companies do ALL the filtering from their end so it CANNOT be tampered with or bypassed by ANYONE. The only way to bypass it is to cancel their service. The "mbusa.com" is kind of cute, their name is "Mayberry Online" and they have a little sheriff's badge, etc to resemble Mayberry RFD. I hope you find this info useful." Both Family Connect and Mayberry USA are ISPs. You sign up with them as your ISP. You access the internet through their servers, which filter out undesirable content. Since the filtering is at their end, you can not circumvent the filtering at your end. The downside is you must switch ISPs and that even as an adult, you may not be able to bypass their filtering. Beki Keeler 91 wrote: "I noticed your article about children and the Internet, and I want you to know that My family used to have AT&T Worldnet and the first time I decided to surf the web I was trying to buy concert tickets as a present and I spelled the name incorrectly and got onto a porn sight that I did not want to be on. I talked to several people and found Integrity On-line. Integrity On-line is a Christian Organization that has the capability to block uncensored sights. When you spell something wrong it gives you a blank page and if you have something blocked and find it in error you can call Integrity On-Line. It is $21.95 a month in our area and the question I get the most is can you still surf the web? Yes!!! You still have access to Yahoo and the rest you just have secure access. I have no fear now to go on-line. I do not like the fact that bad things can infiltrate small/big minds alike with the tap of a key, and with moral values and keeping our home clean and Christ centered this is a way to help. If anyone has any questions they can log on to: www.integrityol.com There are other services as well to protect the innocence of our children." Randy Reid 84 co-founded Honorguard, a Christian filtered ISP. Especially since so many homes now have PCs. The two go hand and hand. Unfortunately, most of the manufactures who make the machines charge a fortune for the design discs that they produce and sell. After a person has used a design several times they tire of it. So a new business that has emerged from this need is the machine embroidery designers. They have popped up all over the internet. I myself have been into the computerized machines for quite a few years. Most home embroiders have the capability of digitizing their own designs but are not artists, so they use color book or clip art. I have the great fortune of having a good friend who is a gifted artist who after seeing what a machine can do offered to be my partner. She draws and I digitize. We decided to open a new web page and sell our designs. We only opened a week ago and are off to a great start. We will be adding collections frequently so anyone interested can sign up on the newsletter on our page. Oh the name of our site is Twin Star Designs: http://twinstardesigns.com Please check it out! We are also thinking of writing a booklet of what it really involves opening a web page for business. Isn't it wonderful what computers have brought into all of our lives." Randi is offering a 10% discount to Encina alumni! AMAZON.BOMB I love the store but what about the high-flying stock? This week Barron's roasted amazon.com in an article entitled "Amazon.bomb". Barron's contends that high flying internet retailer Amazon.com is facing the same woes that other retailers contend with, such as real estate costs, inventory management, marketing expenses and competition. Barron's says that Amazon.com is not much different than other "middlemen" in the distribution business. Barron's notes that the stock has lost almost half of its value since April and that several analysts indicate the stock could be worth less than $10 a share.
