VIETNAM Randi Muller 62 wrote: "What I would like to ask is something I've been thinking about for a long time. It isn't very pleasant, but I know it with out any doubt affect us all during the first 10 to 15 years of the school. What I would like to know is if there is any documentation of any of our young Encina men and women who may have been killed in the Viet Nam war. I know we must have lost some. Could we put out a request to see if any of us know of anyone who may have perished over there? I feel that it would be good for us all to know who we may have lost." If you know of Encina alumni who were killed in the Viet Nam war, please send me their names and I'll assemble a list. FAME Bryan Evans 78 wrote: "Barry Wisdom 1978 did some writing for the Sacramento Union. An opinion column, I think. In mid-eighties possibly." EXPERTS Brian Brown '84 wrote: "I am an Electrician and I am willing to give advice to people who need help. The sad thing I have noticed is that most home owners think they are electricians. This is a myth. Look at all the fires and deaths attributed to electrical faults! Most are caused by the homeowner and blamed on the Electrician who wired the home or the age of the home! God knows, everyone wants to be an Electrician! hehehe. I will be willing to give advice to those in need of information on this subject. I have been an Industrial, Commercial and residential Electrician for 12 years in CA and MI." Michael Babayco '72 wrote: "Computer Instructor and Teacher of Teachers Pantomime I really enjoy helping new people get involved with computers. I teach many kinds of beginning classes as well as teacher training courses of a variety of subjects - intro to computers, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Internet, web page design, etc. I am "bi" - I do both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. I also have been a mime (please don't shoot me!) since 1976; even did it full-time for 5+ years before becoming a teacher. Will be willing to help in either category." BASKETBALL Deborah Young writes: 1/6/98: "Our game last night was very exciting! We went into triple overtime! Unfortunately we lost to Colfax (98) - Encina (91). The top three scores were from Reondre Walker with 29, Julio Murillo with 21, and Ricci Dula with 12." FOUND Kamala Peterson found her old friend Julie Baxter 83. Neal Francino 82 is in contact with Robert Watson 79 and Mark Posehn 79 (now Mark Nelson). Kelly Horine 88 wrote about Kim Thorstad 91: "If you still need the scoop on Kim Thorstad, I know all of it. Its very sad so be prepared. Most know that she was in an auto accident in high school that left her in a coma. After years of rehab, she learned to walk and talk again. She even went back to high school. Shortly after she graduated, a man broke into her home and kicked her so many times that she went in to a coma again. She is now in a wheel chair, deaf, and she can not speak much at all. She requires 24hr care. I visited with her in October, and she knew who I was. She has known me all of her life though. If anybody has any questions you can call. Kelly 916-988-4463 By the way, the guy is in prison. 25 yrs to life for Kim & I believe 40 years to life for something else! Thank God!" Several alumni wrote me about Chris Von Sonn 82: Pamela Nielsen 85 wrote: "Wanted to let you know. Chris Von Sonn of class of 1983 passed away in 1994. This was extremely sad and sudden. Chris had a liver condition and actually had surpassed all of the doctors expectations for some 25-30 years. He passed away during a dialysis treatment. My husband and I were very close friends of his. It was very sad for all of us who knew him as Chris was one of the most sincere and loving people you will ever meet. We miss him with every passing day and he will always be in our hearts." Katera Forbes 85 wrote: "I'm sorry that my first contribution to the alumni search is such a sad thing. Christopher Von Sonn died of heart failure in 1994 while on a dialysis machine in an Los Angeles area hospital. Several friends, including me, attended the memorial services. We heard (some of us for the first time) how Chris had battled with illness from the day he was born. He achieved many of his life goals, including the sale of a sitcom idea to a major network. We miss him and honor his memory whenever the "old gang" gets together." Eric Storm 83 wrote: "I'm sorry to say that Chris Von Sonn passed away due to heart failure in December '94. Beau Bridges, a longtime friend, spoke very movingly at the funeral. He was living in Los Angeles and had just sold a script for a TV series to Dick Clark Productions." THETRIP.COM TheTrip.com's FlightTracker service provides real-time access to information about flights including a plane's altitude, direction, and speed. FlightTracker can e-mail messages about flight arrivals, too. This is a very cool service for when you're picking up someone at the airport and want to know if their flight is on time. NETZERO For those of you without internet access (Juno) or without internet access at home, check out NetZero (www.netzero.com). This ISP is FREE and is supported by ads. They claim to have grown to over 200,000 subscribers in there three month existence. If you're interested I'll forward you the article in Red Herring magazine about them. Note that I have no personal experience with NetZero, but I would be interested in hearing from anyone who does. ZELDA 64 I received the Nintendo Zelda 64 game for Christmas and this is one amazing game. I wasted untold hours over the holidays and the kids were captivated. Best Nintendo 64 game since Super Mario 64. Here's a direct link to eToys, which has Zelda 64 in stock: http://www.etoys.com/index.html?08186&R=eg/eg_nin0093_001.shtml MICE I've heard noises from our attic and when I investigated, it appears that we have mice as there are little droppings. All our eave vents are screened and I can't locate where they are getting in. I don't want to poison them and have dead mice decaying. Trapping is a possibility. A relative recommended installing an ultrasonic pest repeller to discourage mice by making it uncomfortable for them. Has anyone had success with ultrasonic pest repellers? I would appreciate any suggestions.
