If you cannot attend the 40th anniversary luncheon but would like to express your support via a monetary contribution please write your check to Class of 1999 and send it to: Stacey Shomaker c/o Encina High School 1400 Bell Street Sacramento,CA 95825 Steve Palmer '74 and Randy Palmer '71 plan to attend and wrote asking me whether I planned to go. Unfortunately I live in the Bay Area and it's a long drive for me to attend so I planned to express my support monetarily. Besides, I do have a job other than running the Encina website, contrary to what some people think. But I'll make Encina alumni this offer. If I hear from twenty alumni today that they plan to attend the lunch tomorrow, I will drive out for the lunch to express my support. Randy and Steve Palmer count as two. Current students don't count. ENCINA TRIVIA Greg Vitaich '62 sent me some Encina trivia questions: 1. Who's car was named Crab Louie?? 2. Who drove a 1948 Bentley to graduation? 3. Who was Encina's first homecoming queen? Answers next week. HALL OF FAME Chuck Long 65 wrote: "Just a little correction to the hall of fame entry of Jim Eakins. Jim lived a couple of blocks from me and was not in the class of 65, although he still was a monster. Jim was class of 63 or 64 I believe. He made it to the NBA for at least a year that I know of, as I saw him play the Portland Trailblazers in the early to mid 70's as back up center for the Kansas City Kings." Andrea Mandell 76 wrote: "Your sad news about John Johns also reminds me to tell you that Ronnie Lew, class of 76, sadly passed away in 1996. It was sudden and unexpected. She and her husband invented Koosh Balls. They made a success of that company with a lot of hard work and determination." Veronica Spencer-Hawkins 86 wrote: "a possibility to check out for our hall of fame...Class of '86 had a student leader named Lynsey Paulo. Her ambition and goals involved broadcast journalism... late one night a few weeks ago I was watching old movies on the USA NETWORK... at the one minute news break, reporter Lynsey Paulo came on to report the news. Does anyone still have contact with her? Perhaps to let us know if this was the same person who graduated at Encina in '86?" Almost 10 percent of U.S. consumers made a purchase online the week after Thanksgiving, according to a survey by the Marketing Corp. of America cited by Reuters. "We continue to see virtually exponential growth in online purchasing penetration, from barely one percent a year ago, to four percent last spring, and now to 10 percent," said Craig Johnson, a partner in the research firm. E-shopping is gaining, he added, because more people have online access and consumers are feeling more secure about giving their credit card number on the Net." I did almost all my christmas shopping on the internet this year. How about you??? FURBY HUMOR Fortune columnist Andrew Serwer wrote: "FURBY... Bad trade, man. Bad trade. So I lost my shirt on Furby futures! I bought three Furbies for about $120 each. Tried to sell two for at least $150 each!!! Went out on Fifth Avenue and tried to sell 'em in front of FAO Schwartz. Bad scene. Little kids running up to me: "Oh Furby!! Furby!! Mommy, look it's Furby!" Mommy comes up: "How much for Furby?" Me: "$150." Mom: "Forget it." Kids: "Mommy, why is that mean man selling Furby for so much money?" Oh great. I'm an ogre. Then the requisite Japanese TV crew comes along. "Excuse me, but why please are you selling this, yes?" Me: " 'Cause I wanna get rich." Them: "Oh, but why not Internet stocks?" Me: "Forget it." By then, cops are sniffing around. It's not fun. I want out. A little girl comes up. She's right out of Cindy from "The Brady Bunch." She: "How much for Furby?" Me: "75." She "Thents?" Oh God! Finally some silly rich people come over and buy 'em for $80. The Dad pulls money out: "I don't even know what these things are!!!" Okay fine, so I lose $40 per Furb. Not good. (Don't cry for me though, Ol' Henry Luce is good for it. Like Credit Suisse for First Boston's trades!) Still, I learned a lot about supply, demand, trading. And, as they might say at the end of a "Waltons" episode, I learned a little bit about myself too. I'm better with the pen than with the sword. And I'm a ring-tailed doofus! (Thanks to Chris Peacock for bodyguarding and photos!) Witness the Furbitrage in action at http://cgi.pathfinder.com/fortune/fbr/andy/andy.html ." This is a crack up. Check out the URL above for pictures of Serwer in action. MISSING We found a couple missing alumni this time. Jan Sooter '73 sent me the address for Laurie Lindseth 74. Laurie is a neighbor of hers. Terry Reed wrote that she is administrative assistant to the Superintendent of the Rocklin Unified School District. Terry worked in the Encina Counseling office from 1973-1994. Joanne Smith, Encina register, told Terry we were looking for her. Here's the full list since we have a lot of new alumni on the mailing list who haven't seen it.
