Subject:Encina (John Johns/Kojima/Booster Club/Services/xmas cards/fame/65 directory/82 video/basketball/store/whats new) Date:Tue, 8 Dec 1998 13:35:03 -0800 Encina alumni, JOHN JOHNS '72 Chris Kojima writes that John Johns passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, December 4. John died from cancer. John's family lives in Salem, Oregon if you wish to send condolences. Chris visited John about a month ago in Oregon. Talk about keeping in touch with your students... CHRIS KOJIMA I was touched by something Renee Welch '72 wrote in her bio: "Favorite_teachers: Christine Kojima was my abolute FAVORITE teacher of all time. It's probably her fault I became a teacher. I have always considered her my mentor, and feel very fortunate to count her as a friend." BOOSTER CLUB The Booster Club is having its monthly meeting tonight at EHS library, if anyone is interested in attending! ALUMNI SERVICES Randy Palmer '71 writes: "A useful addition to the Encina web page, might be a list of Encinians who have services to offer to others. For example, we offer invention and product design services, whereas others might offer catering, financial planning, or video production. What do you think?" I've thought of this before because Encina alumni have started or run a number of interesting businesses. But I didn't want the website to be too commercial. Of course you could argue the Encina Store is pretty commercial but it's purpose is to defray website expenses. Perhaps we could limit the listings to those businesses which have Encina alumni as principals. I think this is a worthwhile addition to the website. Any comments? Write me if you have such a business you would like to promote, know of another alumni with such a business, or think that this is a bad idea... CHRISTMAS CARDS I'm going to create a Christmas card page in the Photos section of the website. If you send me (email or regular mail) your family christmas photo I'll add it to the Christmas card page. Please identify everyone in the picture. HALL OF FAME Elaine Hamby '77 tracked down Tim Bond '76, who is the associate artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival at Ashland. I used to attend regularly until we had kids. Lou DeCosta '66 wrote: "Mike Soloman '66 is now president/ceo of Tower Records, which is father founded in 1960. Before that he grew specialized crops in Humboldt county and was a pretty fair country lawyer. In fact, we once had once of those attorney/prisoner through-the-glass-while-talking-on-a-telephone conversations you see on tv." After reading this I asked Lou DeCosta '66 which side of the glass he was on and whether I could quote him in entirety. Lou wrote back: "sure, go ahead, i was, of course, on the wrong side, a trouble-making tradition stretching back at least as far as encina. i was once asked to give a college commence day address and they wanted a 25-word or less summary of my professional career, so I wrote: "Nine Emmys, four jails. NBC Pres. Brandon Tartikoff called me an "insightful, untapped resource." Sup. Court Judge Harold Milner called me an "insolent, professional scoflaw." (they also wanted a picture for the program, so I sent 'em a headshot of sammy davis, jr.)" CLASS OF '65 The memory books for the Class of 65's 25th and 30th reunions contained names and addresses for many classmates. I've added the names to the 65 class directory: http://www.encinahighschool.com/directory/directory65.htm CLASS OF '82 VIDEO Lisa Kroll '82 writes: "Regarding the class of 82 video. There was in fact a video made because I remember watching it in the gym before we graduated. Who made I can't remember but the search for this person might start with the class that taught producing and filming or something similar to that. I wasn't involved in the video other than being in it and viewing it so I'm sorry I'm not much help. I thought you guys might want some confirmation that there actually was one." I contacted teacher Stephanie Woo, who wrote: "I'll try to find out who made that video for the Class of '82. I remember a man coming from Las Vegas to get some footage from me and to film around the school. He was amazed at the swimming pool being filled in (no funds to repair it so they have grown grass on it) and spent a lot of time catching up with Judy Wilson. Judy did not go to the reunion even though she was invited. I had asked him to mail me a copy of the finished video but he never did share that with me." ENCINA BASKETBALL Mother Deborah Young wrote on Monday: "Encina had their first Basketball Tournament this weekend, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We lost our first game to Sacramento High Thursday Night, I think the deck was stack against us, but "O well".  We won our second game against Hiram Johnson, and lost our third game Saturday to El Camino. Our men played their hearts out, considering we are Division IV and we played against Division I, I think we did well.   We placed 6th in the competition of eight teams. Neil Young walked away with the only trophy that was given out for the 6th place team. I didn't think it was fair to give only one trophy, and not afford the same to the whole team! We have a home game tonight (Monday) at Encina against Rio Linda, and then another tournament at Hiram Johnson this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Come support the team!" On Tuesday Deborah Young wrote: "Encina was victorious over Rio Linda at last night's basketball game! Encina 80 vs. Rio Linda 45! The three that stood out as having a great night for Encina were; Juilo Murillo (most points and steals), Kwesi Byrdie (points), and Neil Young (blocks and rebounds). Our next game is in the Hiram Johnson Tourney at Johnson on Thursday, Friday and Saturday!" STORE Inventor brothers Randy Palmer '71 and Steve Palmer '74 invented the Nerf Electric Eel. They have their own research lab in Cameron Park. Randy Palmer '71 writes: "You can find the Electric Eel listed at http://www.etoys.com/html/et/et_has0007_001.shtml   Four years after designing the prototype, we finally have been allowed a patent! (the US Patent Office moves rather slowly). It's good to know that a generous 25% of etoy sales goes to our web page." Cynthia Connell '73 writes: "Just wanted to let you know I just made my first purchase at the Encina Store, from eToys. Will be doing a lot of web-shopping for xmas and will try to use the store as often as possible." Virgina Walker '74 also wrote "I bought some toys from the etoys connection." If you waited to order Zelda 64 from eToys it's too late. I checked over the weekend and they're out of stock now. Friday's Wall Street Journal said "the game, released Nov. 23, is on track to shatter video-game sales records. 'In dollars, Zelda will probably be the single-biggest item selling this holiday season' " The Sunday San Jose Mercury News had an article called "Online shopping fear called 'non-issue' in which they said that there are no known cases of credit card account numbers being intercepted on the internet. "Insecurity about credit card usage remains the leading impediment to online shopping's growth. Nine of 10 people who don't shop online cite qualms like hers, according to surveys. Yet their fears are unwarranted. Using a credit card online may actually be safer than using one by phone or in person, experts say." Let me know if you would like a copy of either of these articles.
