Subject:Encina (website/memory books/history/montoya/hall of fame/class video/store/missing/whatsnew) Date:Thu, 3 Dec 1998 10:40:52 -0800 Encina alumni, WEBSITE PROBLEMS The Encina website underwent a minor meltdown over the Thanksgiving weekend. I'm surprised no one sent me mail commenting on it but I guess you were all busy with family and shopping. Chuck Long '65 was nice enough to mail me his 25th and 30th reunion memory books while Diane Schoenborn 73 sent me her 10th and 15th reunion memory books. I was attempted to upload all this stuff and FrontPage wouldn't cooperate. During the process of experimenting I hosed the website so that all the nice backgrounds turned to gray although the content was still there. I eventually was able to recover on Sunday but the website may have looked a little strange for a few days. As Linda Goff's signature says: "Computers are wonderful - except when they're not." If you come across any pages which are still gray please let me know. I fixed most of them... As far as I can tell, FrontPage appears to have problems with large websites if you try and upload too many files. I was able to get FrontPage to work by backing out some of my changes and uploading one chunk of pages at a time. If you are familiar with FrontPage and have any advice I would appreciate it. I know we have a couple alumni who do webstuff for a living out there. REUNION MEMORY BOOKS If you're interested in viewing the reunion memory books which caused so much trouble here they are: Class of 65's 25th and 30th reunions (both photo books): There's even a couple pictures of Timothy B Schmit and Tom Phillips. This was quite fun to look through although it was before my time... Class of 73's 10th and 15th reunions (both bio books): If you have a reunion memory book for your last reunion that you wouldn't mind loaning to me I'll be glad to scan it in and return it to you. I think that classmates who did not attend will especially enjoy looking at the reunion photobooks. HISTORY Shannon Engle 86 writes: "I attended Encina from Nov. 1985-June 1986. I don't recall hearing anything about it being an Academy. There did seem to be less of an emphasis on college prep courses than at my previous high school (C. K. McClatchy). I did have a great time there, though. It was the first time I really received a "well-rounded" education, focusing on arts as well as academics. It also seemed like there was less stratification of classes. Maybe I was seeing things through rose-colored glasses, but that is the way I remember it. Also, I am looking for a friend that I have lost touch with. Her name is Kelly Mortenson and graduated in 1986." Barbara Rea 62 writes: "Have you ever seen the earlier yearbooks? They are quite a kick. When you see them, you see that we always wore dresses. The only time we could even think of wearing pants was one day a year for some special occasion, like Apache Day, or something like that. I'd have to ask the others what the occasion was. I do remember all of us lying on the lawn in peddle pushers or capris on that one special day. There was never any reason to worry that a girl would wear pants to school and have to be sent home, because no one would ever think to do it. It just wasn't part of our mindset. Girls just wore dresses! How funny that I told my future husband in about 1964, that if I had girls, they would never wear levis. First of all, one must never say never. The joke on me is that my girls (3 of them) either wore shorts or levis all through high school." Barbara has offered to loan me her yearbooks to scan in stuff from Encina's early days for the website. No time this month but next year. She's going to kill me if I don't return her yearbooks unharmed so I hope you all appreciate the risks I take for you... HALL OF FAME Elaine Hamby '77 writes: "Richard Montoya '77, formed a Chicano comedy/drama theater group in 1984 called Culture Clash < www.cultureclash.com   >. They have a book out that's available from amazon.com (search by Richard's name) that is a compilation of some of their best work of the last 14 years. They were featured on the PBS series "Great Performances", and had a comedy sketch series on Fox television. Their web site includes information about what they have done, and what they are doing, such as three new commissioned works! Richard Montoya can also be found on the Internet Movie Data Base < www.imdb.com   >, with three movies to his credit. (Several book signings and a performance are scheduled for December in the Bay Area.)." I wrote to Richard care of the Culture Clash website and have his email address if you want to contact him. Here's a link to Richard's book "Culture Clash : Life, Death and Revolutionary Comedy : The Mission, a Bowl of Bings, Radio Mambo" on amazon.com - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1559361395/qid%3D912707493/002-5256686-0147016 amazon.com lets people review books. This is what one reader wrote: eloyortiz@hotmail.com  from San Jose, CA , November 12, 1998 'A collection of their first three plays "Culture Clash: Life, Death..." is not really a novel or biography of the comedy/performance group, but a collection of their first three plays "The Mission," "Bowl of Beings" and "Radio Mambo." The book also includes a relatively short interview with the group where they discuss their origins and an introduction to the three plays each done by one of the members. That said, the actual plays are great. They are original, political, thought provoking, hilarious. "The Mission" is about a Chicano comedy groups kidnapping of the greatest Latino entertainer Julio Iglesias. "Bowl Of Beings" is a collection of sketch pieces which includes "Stand and Deliver Pizza" and "The Return of Che Guevara." "Radio Mambo," is a series of sketches done in interview form (mostly) commissioned by the City of Miami. It thoughtfully examines the social complexities of the Black, Jewish, Cuban, Haitian and White communities of Miami The best part of Culture Clash is their ability to blend the Chicano political conciousness with humor and making it accesible to all without "selling out." If you haven't seen them live, think about doing so. The three plays are great, but may not be as entertaining if you haven't seen their manic performance style.' HALL OF FAME Michael Babayco '72 sent me some more information about famous Encinians which I forgot to include. Here's something about the bands "Glad" and "The New Breed" which starred Encina alumni Tom Phillips '65, George Hullin '65, Ron Flogel '65 and Timothy Schmit '65. I know how to contact everyone but Ron Flogel... "Band: Glad Personnel: TOM PHILLIPS gtr, piano, vcls; GEORGE HULLIN drms, vcls; RON FLOGEL gtr, vcls; TIM SCHIMDT bs, vcls A ALBUM: 1.(A) FEELIN' GLAD (ABC ABCS-655) 1968 45s: 1.See What You Mean/? By 1965 they had changed name again to The New Breed and achieved some commercial success locally. When Los Angeles producer Terry Melcher (Doris Day's son) signed them to his Equinox label, he changed their name again to the hippier-sounding Glad. They recorded two psychedelic 45s for Equinox. The album is in a flower-power pop/soft rock vein with lots of harmonies and orchestration. Schimdt went on to play for Poco and later The Eagles. The other three formed another country-influenced outfit, Redwing, who recorded five albums for Fantasy during the 1970s. Their finest moment, Want Ad Reader, can be heard on Psychedelic Unknowns, Vol 7 and Sound Of The Sixties: San Francisco, Part 1. After a few 45s they changed name again beginning work on an album using the name Never Mind, although the album was later issued under the name Glad who later evolved into Redwing. Tim Schmidt would go on to Poco amongst others." I couldn't find any listings for "Feelin' Glad" by Glad but "Want Ad Reader" by The New Breed is available on both CDnow and amazon.com. CLASS OF 1982 VIDEO Kamala Peterson 82 writes: "My class (1982) apparently made a Class Video and we were to show it at our Senior Banquet. Unfortunately, the person making the video never made it to the Senior banquet and we never got to watch the Class video. I heard later that there WAS a video made. My problem is in trying to find this video, as if there really is one, I'd like to purchase a copy of it if it's possible. I was wondering if you could assist in finding out if there was such a video and if so, how to obtain a copy." If you have any ideas how to locate the video or know who made the video please let me know so we can track down this video for Kamala. STORE I've added a link to eToys, the biggest toystore on the internet. In addition to toys, eToys also sells videogames, children's software, children's music and children's videos. Do your Christmas shopping from home, avoid the crowds and support the Encina website at the same time by doing your Christmas shopping at eToys. The website gets a 12.5% commission on purchases!!! eToys even has the hot Zelda 64 videogame for the Nintendo 64 in stock the last time I checked. This is what I want for Christmas! They don't have any Furbys in stock but they are giving a Furby away every day so stop by and register for the eToys Furby-a-Day sweepstakes. Check out eToys! Last week alumni purchased three books from amazon.com. Thanks!
