The Sacramento Bee, August 22, 2002 Media Savvy Column by J. Freedom du Lac Homecoming Hugs: Lynsey Paulo, the new consumer reporter for Channel 3 (KCRA), had an interesting exchange the other day when she introduced herself at a public relations firm and the guy whose hand she was trying to shake wanted to hug her. Paulo, of course, obliged. After all, she'd attended Encina High School with the guy and hadn't seen him in years. "It was pretty funny," she says. "Even though Sacramento seems bigger to me, it's still got that neat small-town feel, which is one of the reasons I wanted to come back." Paulo not only grew up in Sacramento, where she still has considerable family, but she also had an internship once at KCRA. Still, she hadn't called Sacramento home for nearly a dozen years -- not since she began working as a broadcaster after a 10-month stint as a reporter for the Galt Herald. "It's a little weird coming back," she says. "It's been a long time since I lived here. A lot has stayed the same, but a lot has changed." One thing that hasn't she hopes, is the winter weather. Having spent the last six years in Minneapolis, where she was a noon news anchor and education reporter for the ABC affiliate, Paulo is looking forward to being able to walk around in the winter without wearing a ski parka on top of a wool sweater on top of a turtleneck. "I'm glad to be home," she says, "but come January, I'm going to be really, really glad to be here." REUNION RECOMMENDATION Kevin Anderson 82 wrote: "Thank you for enabling us to reach so many classmates thru the website. We had a wonderful time. I would like to recommend the Croatian American Cultural Center to anyone who needs a location for any event, especially a reunion. Mike Zupan, the coordinator for the hall, is a personal friend of mine and he will take care of all the details so that the group can just show up and party. The food is delicious, the hall is BEAUTIFUL and the staff is superior. The cost is extremely competitive. I had my wedding reception there and I don't think there is a better place in town. As classes begin to plan, they may want to consider this location. They do book about a year in advance so people need to be well organized. Mike is great about creating a fixed price for everything, rather than breaking it down by each thing you need. He charged us $45/person for the following: Fully stocked, open bar all night (premium liquors, wine and beer) Hor's D ouvre( or however you spell it) Dinner (three main dishes, four sides, salad, bread) Dessert (cheesecake and fruitbasket cake from Ettorre) All the linens, plates, silver etc. and the servers, bartenders and workers It is a great deal for what you get. I would challenge anyone to get a better deal that is equal in quality, atmosphere, and professionalism. Just thought I would pass this along to anyone that might be looking for a great location. Anyway I just wanted to thank all of you for coming. I think for the most part everyone had a great time. And may I also say that you all looked great after 20 years. I thought the party was great but just a little short. Next time we will have to have the hall till 2:00 a.m. I thought we just got going at 12:00 and then had to pack it up. And I am very surprised for a bunch of old people like us we managed to make a dent in the bar and have a great time to. The next day was the picnic and after a couple problems I thought the picnic was a success even though it was 105 out there that day. It was nice to see everyone again and their families to. There was just one problem none of us wore our badges the next day and I think we couldn't recognize everyone. lol I have talked to the committee and we think we are going to try this again for our 25th. That is if no one has any objections. We will definitely be looking for some help next time if any one wants to volunteer. I did talk to a few already and I thought that was excellent so we will call you. Thanks to Moya I have my pics for you to see. just click on the address below and when the pics come up click on the first one and then you can continue to click on the arrow for a slideshow. Apparently the owners of this house had been seeing images and hearing voices for quite a while. They did some research and found that a lady once lived in the house that lost her husband during the civil war. Legend says that she used to sit at the table and look across the fields in anticipation of her loved one returning home. He never came. So, they say she still waits. They caught this photo of what they claim to be her. This one was wild and a little spooky once you find the ghost in the picture. It took me a few seconds to find it, but when you do it just stands out, like one of those optical illusions. Be patient, I guarantee you she's in the room. To save you some time, concentrate around the table. Best not to focus too much on one spot. Look around the table and toward the window. Click on the link below for the picture. Best to enlarge. For an added touch turn up the volume, it's faint but you can hear the ghost talking sometimes in a low murmur.
