Sue Kehoe and the reunion committee did a fine job of organizing a weekend of activities for their classmates! I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures Craig Moseley 72 and Kerry Shearer 72 took at the party. REUNIONS The next reunions are: Class of 82 - August 9, 2002 Class of 87 - August 17, 2002 Class of 62 - September 28, 2002 Class of 92 - October 19, 2002 For those who have reunions this summer, I encourage you to RSVP as soon as possible. Having worked on the last 73 reunion, I know that you must let the caterers/hotel know early on how many people you expect. In some rates, the room charge depends on the number of people. Give your reunion committees a break and RSVP now! Reunion committees, I suggest you publish lists of those who have rsvped so far to the class mailing lists. I'll be glad to publish these lists on the class homepages and keep them up to date. Also, encourage your classmates to submit their bios. Knowing who's going and what classmates have been up to help folks to decide whether they will attend or not. Get conversations going on your class mailing list too. CLASS OF 1962 *** UPDATE *** Sugar Holmes Herrero is in charge of the reunion video. Sugar does not have email and won't be able to make the next reunion meeting so here I am. She has reviewed several companies for this service and it has been suggested to her by one of them that we should see if any of our classmates would be interested in doing it. I am sure there are some great producers out there we aren't aware of. This is your chance to shine! We are going to have to make a decision soon. The next reunion meeting is this coming Monday. If this appeals to any of you or you would like more information, please let me know. Prove me wrong with your response: I have always been of the opinion that summer (August) is the best time for a reunion party due to the fact that classmates who live out of Sacramento have to worry about their children's school and sports schedules more during the rest of the year. Remember that our classmates have children ranging from newborn to adult, with the majority still in school, following a traditional school year calendar. Remember that planning a reunion party is like planning a wedding in that it takes about a year. It is probably already too late to get a place in Sacramento for next May. We welcome suggestions for dates, types of parties, and places to hold our reunion. We also would welcome any help you would like to offer. In the past, we have had a Friday night grad-only gathering, a Saturday night dinner party, and a Sunday picnic in a park. Thank you to Cherish Cooley and Michelle Pyorre for all your help setting up and decorating, and to those of you who stayed after, Michelle Stamp and Sharon Lewis, to help us clean up. I am curious, because a lot of you who RSVP'd didn't show up. Did you have a hard time finding the place? I was just hoping that more of you would have showed up. Plus, the people who did show up were expecting a lot more of there friends to come. It's ok because we had a lot of fun, even though it was very hot. There was a slight breeze that would come up about once an hour to give us a little tease of relief. I had a really good time and I was very pooped afterwards. I hope that everyone who came enjoyed themselves . Next time, we will do it in September or October, so there will be a lot less sweating and a lot more people coming (because they won't have the weather as an excuse ) . I want to send a huge THANK YOU to Tom Toth for bringing out his very nice sound system, as well as the ' 80's tunes. Thanks also for bringing out and setting up the volleyball net . We appreciate all that you did. Your family was great too. Aslo a big thank you to Pat Storm for bringing all the swimming trinkets you brought for everyone to take home. It was very nice to see you all and to visit with you . It was great catching up and seeing what everyone's been up to the last couple of years. Thanks again for coming out, you made it all worth it. Unfortunately, quite a few pages were crooked or cut off or missing. I fixed what I could and rescanned some of the pages where necessary from my copy of the 71 yearbook. There are a few missing pages I can't scan from my copy because they contain personal notes. If you have a 71 yearbook and scanner and could scan a few pages for me, let me know. Once I have all the pages I can put the 71 yearbook online. Thanks! THE AGE CONSPIRACY Have you ever noticed that when you're of a certain age, everything seems uphill from where you are?... ... Stairs are steeper. Groceries are heavier. And, everything is farther away. ... Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long our street had become! ... And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up, they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they're red in the face! What do they think I am, a lip reader? ... I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn't even recognize me. I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection... Well, REALLY NOW ...even mirrors are not made the way they used to be! ... Another thing, everyone drives so fast today! You're risking life and limb if you just happen to pull onto the freeway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror. ... Clothing manufacturers are less civilized these days. Why else would they suddenly start labeling a size 10 or 12 dress as 18 or 20? Do they think no one notices that these things no longer fit around the waist, hips, thighs, and bosom? The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank, but in reverse. Do they think I actually believe the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they're fooling?!? I'd like to call up someone in authority to report what's going on---but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they've printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in here! All I can do is pass along this warning: Maturity is under attack! Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities... PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO WE CAN GET THIS CONSPIRACY STOPPED! YAHOO EMAIL http://www.ntk.net/2002/07/12/ >> HARD NEWS << in powers of two Nice to see, in the midst of all these scandals, Yahoo turning a healthy profit. But as other companies fiddle the figures, Yahoo's been busy instead with fiddling its own users' private correspondence. In a fantastically clumsy attempt to prevent cross-site scripting attacks, the free e-mail wing of the sprawling giant has long been replacing complete English words in the text of HTML mail sent to its users. Mention "mocha" in an HTML mail to a friend with a @yahoo.com account, and your choice in coffee will be silently switched to "espresso". Talk about "free expression", and your recipient will think you said "free statement". Here's the full list of swaperoos: http://www.ntk.net/2002/07/12/yahoo.txt - try not to mail it to your friends This fiddling has been going on now for over a year year (the ever vigilant RISKS digest noted it back in March 2001). But because of Yahoo's underhand methods, very few people have spotted the turnabout - certainly far fewer than if Yahoo had done the sensible thing and, say, "**"'ed out the vowels in the word, or, God forbid, written a smarter parser. But the sneakier you are, the wider the damage spreads. The word "medieval" (since it contains the javascript command "eval") is converted in Yahoo mail to "medireview". Google now shows over 640 sites (and 1,150 separate instances) of the word "medireview" being used as a synonym for medieval. University papers, bibliographies and book reviews, Indian newspaper columnists, and endless enthusiast sites drop it unseen into texts. People have begun to ask where it originally came from, and does it have a subtler meaning beyond "medieval"? Is Yahoo ever going to fix its filters? Or is it time we pushed to get the first regexp-obfuscated word into the Oxford English Dictionary? http://catless.ncl.ac.uk/Risks/21.34.html - does anyone still at Yahoo even know how to turn it off? http://www.google.com/search?q=medireview - NTK now entirely filled with google links Since this came out, Yahoo has evidentally fixed it's filters...
