PATTY WOHL 77, PAUL STEWART 76 A backyard visit to 'Wonderland' By Gwen Schoen -- Bee Staff Writer Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Saturday, June 15, 2002 Patty Wohl had been studying her fence for weeks, waiting for inspiration. She wanted to give it a face-lift without tearing the whole thing down and starting over. Oddly enough, it was a high school homecoming celebration that provided the solution. "I ran into an old classmate, Paul Stewart, at the homecoming game," says Wohl. "Paul and I started chatting and he told me about the artwork he had been perfecting since high school." Stewart is an artist who specializes in faux painting. He makes things look like something they aren't. For example, he might paint concrete to look like bricks, a plaster wall to look like marble or the side of a building to look like a street scene from the 1940s. Once he painted a giant killer whale on the bottom of a swimming pool. Both Stewart and Wohl, a deputy director in the marketing division of the California Integrated Waste Management Board, graduated from Encina High School in the mid '70s. After the homecoming game, Wohl asked Stewart if he'd take a look at the fence at her Arden Manor home. What she had in mind was something like Alice stepping through the looking glass into Wonderland -- a faux world. "Patty had collected a lot of garden pictures from magazines," says Stewart. "She really likes impressionism, such as Monet. In one of the pictures was a garden with a long, brick walkway flanked by flowers that seemed to go on forever. That was the effect she wanted. To compensate for the small yard, Wohl wanted "something that would give her the feeling of gazing out, something whimsical with a feeling of fantasy," Stewart says. Stewart went to work. He painted a "Wonderland" mural on a separate piece of wood, which was sealed to protect it from the weather. It was then attached to the fence with screws so it can be removed if the fence needs work. Once the mural was in place, Wohl placed bricks in front to look like an extension of the brick path in the painting. Then she planted flowers and vines to further confuse the eye. "I love the effect," says Wohl. "I am so happy with the way it looks. I'm now starting to look at the rest of the fence and wonder about other possibilities." Here's a link to the Bee article, which includes a picture of Paul and the mural: http://www.sacbee.com/content/home/california_life/story/3216280p-4255764c.h tml If you would like to contact Paul Stewart 76 about doing a custom painting or mural for you visit: http://www.internow.com/psplays In case the name sounds familiar to you, Paul has chaired the last three homecoming alumni float committees and done the lion's share of the work on the alumni floats. BARBARA REA 62 Sent: Friday, June 14, 2002 4:03 PM Subject: Barbara Rea Fuller 62's bike ride Barbara (my sister) began her 230 mile bike ride this morning. They started in front of the capitol bldg in Sacramento and will finish by crossing the Golden Gate bridge to the Marina Green. If you are around SF on Sunday afternoon go cheer them on and congratulate them. There are only 20-30 riders and I'm sure she will be in the last group. I can let you know what time they think they will finish if you are interested. She has her cell phone on her bike and I have spoken with her twice today. The last time was around 2pm your time and they had gone about 48 miles and were about to stop for lunch. They are stopping in Napa tonight. Talk with you soon. Cindy Rea MacRae '68 Sent: Friday, June 14, 2002 8:05 PM Subject: RE: Barbara Rea Fuller's bike ride I thought I would let you know how Barbara is doing on her ride. I just spoke with her husband, who is following her. She has gone about 75 miles and has about 12 or 13 more to go for the night. He said they just got through changing one of her tires. Her knees had been bothering her but someone adjusted her seat and it made a big difference. They have had about a 30 mile an hour head wind almost the entire way. I think he said they are just past Vallejo and the winds have died down a bit. Several of the people stopped at 60 miles and went to the hotel but Barb wouldn't quit. He also said a couple of times she thought about it (they are going through the foothills now) and then she would get a phone call and someone would tell her "You can't quit!" so she would keep going. Bob (her husband) said she is doing great. They will ride 50 or 60 miles tomorrow and Sunday. Cindy Sent: Sunday, June 16, 2002 10:30 AM Subject: Barbara's bike ride I thought that I would give you another update on how Barbara is doing. I spoke to her about 1/2 hour ago and she had completed about 10 miles of her 53 mile trip for today. Lots of wind and then she said a huge steep bridge ahead. I will call later to check in. She completed her 89 or 90 miles Friday night. They had to hurry and finish before it got dark. One woman stayed back with Barb to keep her going and there was a man that was with them too. I found out that later, he gave Bob (Barb's husband) a horrible time for encouraging Barb to finish. He was the one having a terrible time finishing but he wasn't about to let two females finish without him. I told Barbara that she had to finish or she would spend the rest of her life wondering if she could have done it. Yesterday they rode 67 miles but it was in a big circle, they called it the Napa Loop. When I spoke with her at the half way point, she said she was surprised but she wasn't even tired. They will finish after going across the Golden Gate Bridge. I am sure that will be a thrill and very emotional to see the bridge in the distance. I will send the final update later. Cindy Sent: Sunday, June 16, 2002 7:31 PM Subject: Barbara's ride Well, she did it! She finished about 4:15 CA time. They rode about 63 miles today, lots of wind. She had a tire completely blow out right before lunch, so she and Bob had to find a place to buy a new one. Then she ate and was back on the road. They congregated on the north side of the Golden Gate. Then someone asked who should lead us across the bridge? They all said Barbara. My Mom said she was all smiles until she got off her and hugged the woman that rode with her part of the way and encouraged her. Barb was the last of the group each day to finish. I can certainly understand the emotions that she felt. Only one of her kids could make the trip but they made a sign and her kids and grandkids signed it. Her daughter and friend held it up so she could see it as they finished. I figure that they went about 220+ miles. I am still waiting to talk with her but it's getting late and they are probably at dinner, then have to drive home. Cindy And here is Barb's recap to the class of 62 list: Hi gang, Alice, Thank you so much for coming down to see us off on Friday. It really meant a lot to me to see you and even more to see you after so many years. You look GREAT! >From the email, I gather that my Dad was supposed to keep Alice informed as to the progress of the ride and evidentally he did not. The ride was truly unbelievable and as I sit here and write this, I almost feel as if it didn't happen. The amazing thing is that my knees are okay, a little sore, but I won't go to the physical therapist because I don't feel like I need to. As Alice said, we left from the Capital about 8:30 after riding there from our hotel. The first thing that amazed me was that we rode to Davis and never would I have thought I would I would ride a bike from Sacramento to Davis - I would have thought it was too far. When we got about 10 miles outside of Dixon, my knees were hurting so badly and I couldn't imagine how I was going to make it the rest of the way. We stopped (because I was crying) and one of the riders suggested that we raise my seat up. We raised it about 1-1/4" and that did the trick. Today I am walking like nothing was ever wrong. The ride was grueling because of the wind. It howled and blew us from Davis until the end of the trail. We only had a very short reprieve in Larkspur where the wind below from behind. The hills were unbelievably tough. The really good riders went right up the hills, but they were agony for me. At one time, the wind blew so hard from the side that it actually cause my tires to slip in that direction. The first day began after 8 am and by 5:30 we were in the hills above Napa, about 25 miles from our hotel. The support van told six of us that we should be shuttled to the hotel because we would miss our dinner, getting our laundry washed (which they did for us) and our evening program and devotionals. My husband Bob had been along with his pickup truck the whole day and I told them I had to finish. They were a little annoyed with me because they didn't feel that it was essential that I finish because they said we had done an amazing job fighting all day against the wind and the hills. When I said I wouln't go back, one of the riders and one staff member said they would accompany me. The hills were really tough and I ended up walking up the top half of several of them. When we got to the top of the second to the last hill before going down into the Napa Valley, I started down only to discover that I could feel every pebble and rock and something didn't seem quite right. When the staff rider came along side of me, I asked him if my tires were okay. He informed me that the back tire was flat. I'm sure I could have ridden up the hills a lot better with a fully inflated tire. Don't be too surprised that I would ride with a flat; I've done that several times in a car, much to my husband's irritation. We finally made it about 30 seconds before dark. Focus on the Family does not allow the riders to ride in the dark and I kept praying that the Lord would hold back the dark so that we could finish. I wouldn't have been happy if we had not finished and I had kept the other two from getting to the end because of me. We rode into the hotel driveway at 9:15pm. Every day I finished last and was commenting to my friend that I am always last. She said, "Don't worry. Remember the Scripture that says, 'The first shall be last and the last shall be first.' " When we assembled at the entrance of the Golden Gate Bridge so that we could all ride across together, they got us together for group pictures. After that, the leader of the team said that they always choose a person to ride in to the finish line first. He asked the group who they should choose. In unison, they all shouted, "Barbara, Barbara, Barbara!" I couldn't believe it! They had me ride in first to the finish line. There were so many others who deserved that honor. We had a lady who weighs about three hundred pounds who finished and I was usually riding behind her. I found out later that she teaches spinning classes (biking) and has lost 100 pounds. She was so inpirational to all of us as we rode 220 miles in three days. Well, that is just the tip of the iceberg, and hopefully I haven't put you all to sleep. This whole experience for me was the issue of trusting the Lord. He's the one who directed me to do this ride and has provided everything I have needed, including the people who have encouraged me and prayed for me along the way. Thank you all for your prayers and support.
