Sent: Friday, May 03, 2002 1:38 PM Subject: [Encina Update] Encina Update (alumni challenge, pledges, vietnam vets, reunions, siblings, search, meredith, madrigals, bios, kings, internet, whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, There is no sponsor for this week's update. There was no update last week in case you were wondering. Attached is a picture of our "Men in Black", the alumni team from the Alumni Challenge 2002. ALUMNI CHALLENGE *** UPDATE *** Our official photographer Rollin Coxe 64 sent me a zip disk containing the pictures he took at the Alumni Challenge. Rollin got some great action shots of the game which I've added here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/rollin.htm If you had any doubt about the intensity with which this game was played, check out Rollin's pictures of the action under the basket. Soft defense, you must be kidding. Check of the picture of the alumni player beset by all five varsity players as he tries to score. Rollin got some great pictures of Ryan Norris '89 getting serious air as he softly dropped in one of his many layups. And of our guys battling for rebounds and fighting to score. Awesome pictures Rollin! Steve Palmer 74 is still working on the alumni challenge video. His work has him down in Brownsville, Texas, setting up a production line for a new product he and his brother Randy Palmer 71 invented. Check out the updated Alumni Challenge page: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02.htm Steve Palmer made Quicktime and AVI videoclips of the Channel 3 coverage (45 seconds) and Richard Nelson's backboard shattering dunk (8 seconds) which are available on the website. Unfortunately, the server isn't set up to stream video so you'll have to wait a while for the clips to download before they start up. I was able to view the clips using Quicktime5 and the Windows Media Player 7.0. If you do not have a high speed link (cable/dsl) you probably should skip the videoclips. If you need to download these viewers there are links to the Apple and Microsoft websites. There are also pictures of my tour of Stephanie Woo's classroom with it's EBS studio and video facilities and of the SCI-FI show in the Encina Art Gallery: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/tour.htm I took pictures of every picture and sculpture. Some of these students are very talented. There are pictures of the dinner in the cafeteria here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/photo1.htm The cafeteria was modernized last year and looks great. It even has air conditioning now. And there are pictures of the unforgettable alumni challenge game here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/game.htm It's not as good as watching the video but I think it captures some of the excitement of the game for those of you who weren't there. Steve Palmer has the tape the professional videographer made, plus tapes that Stephanie Woo and her students filmed at the alumni challenge for EBS, the Encina Broadcasting System. Steve is busy converting Stephanie's tape to DV (digital video) and capturing it all on his Mac. I'm hoping Steve has time to make a short highlight tape of the game for the website while he's in the process of making the tape we plan to send to all those who pledged and supported Encina. PLEDGES Note that the Encina High School Booster Club, Inc tax ID number is 68-0258790. Pledges to the Booster Club are TAX DEDUCTIBLE. I've calculated the total pledge for each donor on the pledge/rsvp page: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/rsvps.htm Please check this page to see how much you owe. Please check my math. I may have over or under calculated your pledge amount. I'll keep this page updated based on Heddy Crowder reports. Make your checks payable to the Encina High School Booster Club and send them to: Encina High School Attention: Heddy Crowder 1400 Bell Street Sacramento,CA 95825 We would appreciate it if everyone would send their pledge in promptly! Thank you for supporting Encina! LATE PLEDGE Dear Harlan, A group of friends from the class of '69 got together last week. Among the things we discussed was your fantastic fundraising effort for the alumni basketball team that will benefit Encina's sports programs. We noticed that the Class of '69 had only one donation and we, belatedly, will be sending a contribution in honor of your efforts and the alumni team's efforts. Thanks for your hard work and dedication to our alma mater! Marcee (Schwartz) Samberg, Lynda (Benvenuti) Taylor, Linda Sheppard, Judy (Wicks) Cadet, and Faye (Wales) Thomas Class of '69 Thank you class of 69! It's not too late. There are still a few classes who did not contribute to the Alumni Challenge: 86, 94, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01 And a few classes with just one lonely donor... UNCOLLECTED PLEDGES Heddy Crowder sent me a list of the pledges Encina has received so far. The total is almost $6500, but we have a long way to go to reach the $40,000 you all so generously pledged. I have to admit, I was one of the late ones. I just sent in my pledge this week. Here is a list of the pledges we have not received. If you have sent your pledge in and are still on the list, let me know. Or you'll probably be on the next list Heddy sends me. Please don't make me or Steve write you a note. I hate reminding folks to send in their pledges. And you probably aren't too thrilled either. My name is Ronnie Sumner and I'm a 1967 graduate of Rio Americano HS! Some of Rio's Vets from the Viet Nam War are having an event in June and want to invite any Vets from the classes of 1967, 1968 and 1969! You might want to mention that this event is to raise money for a plaque to be established at Rio Americano honoring 3 of our fallen Vets who died in Viet Nam...Rocky Cole, Terry Joslin and Danny Twitty! All 3 of these guys lived and grew up in Arden Manor housing developement, bordered by Morse Ave, Arden Way, Watt Ave and FairOaks Blvd. Many of Encina's alumni went to elementary (Edison Elementry) and junior high school (Jonas Salk) with these guys and most likely knew them well! As we all grew up in the same neighborhood and have many common friends that go beyond school dedications! If you could put me in touch with those persons who handle reunions of those years of graduation It would be much appreciated! Feel free to give my email address to anyone who can help! zombiewoof@starband.net Here is the website for all pertainate information that you might want to post in your newsletter! http://www.eteamz.com/sites/merrybikesters/ You have put together a very nice website...keep up the good work! BIOS MARY ELLEN RAMIREZ 62 Occupation: Truckdriver, soon to be a student again children: Jason Michael 33, Mary Frances 31, Ian Matthew 26, and Justin Malachi 23 Bio: Wow! since this is being written on the eve of our 40th reunion, there's much I've done that had you told me about them in 1962 I would have said ...yeah, right!... Let's see had my first child in 1969 and got married. Moved to Ohio to live for 16 very long years, 14 of those years in a Southeastern county that hadn't left the 19th century. Lived in a 3-room shack with no running water or inside facilities for 3 years! Talk about a culture shock, the people in that area couldn't understand why I was so upset and cried about their way of life, it was all they knew and they could see nothing wrong with it. Made me have a great deal more respect for the pioneer women. Learned just how much water it takes to keep minimumly clean when you have to haul it by hand and heat it on a coal stove, also it takes a lot of snow to get one bucket of water. Gained three more children from that union for a total of four, three boys and a girl, divorced and never remarried. All three boys have been in the service, the oldesition Trivia: The fact that I drive "big rigs" for a living and started when there weren't all that many women doing that. Friends: Judy Lamonder who I just recently got in touch with again, Lana Mandella, who I keep in touch with from time to time, and Bill Corrie who along with Lana & myself grew up on the same street Hobbies: Oh gosh, horseback riding, I've always loved them and have owned them and am looking forward to once again owning a couple, water skiing, swimming, dancing, reading, photography, I'm very good at this and sewing and whatever else may come along Kids: They all turned out to be great kids, My daughter gave me my first two grandchildren, a girl 12 and a son 5. My middle son just added the newest one, a son 2 months and the youngest one is still in the Navy and will be responsible for me being able to get back to school sooner than I had planned as I will be moving to Washington state with him after the 40th reunion. I am so proud of all of them. I had no drug problems, run ins with the law, not even any truancy and when you consider the long hours I had to work, they could have done pretty much anything. Grade_school: I went to Dyer-Kelly from 2nd thru 8th grades Grade_school_friends: Lana Mandella, Karen Dunkley, Bill Corrie, Mike Pascoe, Judy LaRue,Bonnie Van Buskirk, Marilyn Clark, Donna Yeast, Junior_high: No junior high here I went to Dyer-Kelly through 8th grade Junior_high_friends: Most of the same mentioned above with Judy Lamonder added Memorable_teachers: Mr Lee, I remember him marching in front of the classroom and really getting into his history lessons, Mr. Coke, I loved to take the animals home for the weekend. A spanish teacher who got "asked" to leave because talks he gave on the conquistadores were misinterpeted. He was very good and dedicated and knew his subject. Favorite_memory: I mostly just took up space and kept my nose in a book. Story: Mrs. Hansen's typing class, I was her "thorn in side" student,. Typing has never been my high suit, however computers have at least made it possible for me to type. She always so proper and ladylike and the world has changed so much in the years since 1962 Sibling_info: Victor M. Ramirez 1965 Michael D. Ramirez 1972 comments: I wish I had been more the person I have become today..I sure missed out on a lot of fun by keeping my nose in a book. I lost touch with just about everyone except Melissa Elkins (Johnson) who got married in 1995. Since looking at the Encina web site I located Elaine Formica, Audreanna Jarwin and through Elaine, I now have a contact for Natalie Scharp. I recently got married to a wonderful man and also became a full-time step-mommy to an 8 year old. My life is wonderful. After High School I got a job as an Office Manager at a jewelry store in Arden Mall (where else), promoted to Executive Secretary and then to Operations Administrator and remaind there for 7 years. Sine my husband owns his own business we decided that recently I would stop working and start my own business. Well, I only lasted 4 months and couldn't handle being around him 24-7 (HAHAHA). The business is still in the beginning stages but hopefully I can return to working for myself once things get off the ground. Looking back I wish I would have gone to college but as they say "It's never too late". I could still wind up a doctor (HAHAHA) Friends: Elaine Formica, Natalie Scharp, Audreanna Jarwin, Bree Bassett, Ryan Connor, Angela Shishido Hobbies: I still love shopping. I guess that was another reason I needed to go back to work. My husband was tired of me spending all of his money. Kids: Alaysha has to be the most sassy 8 year old I know. She is a girly girl and I keep telling her father all of the horror stories from my childhood. Look out world cause here she comes. You would almost think that I gave birth to her. Grade_school: Woodlake D.W. Babcock Grade_school_friends: Well I had many friends in grade school but unfortunately those friendships never carried over to high school. Those people know who they are so names don't need to be mentioned. I hope that at a reunion some friendships will begin again. Junior_high: Rio Tierra Memorable_teachers: Mr. Broadnansky: He had such a great personality Mr. Halfman: He made his class the easiest "A" and my younger step-sister is dating his son. (Go figure) Mr. Drawbert: Only because my sister had him for a math teacher. All of her stories confirmed that it was his way of teaching that got her a "C". So for all of you who sat back in his class saying to yourself... "What did he just do? and How did he do that?", it was him NOT you. (HAHAHA) Favorite_memory: Graduation, since I had to sign a contract with the Principal stating that I missed so many classes (but grades remained good) during my Senior year, I had to attend classes every day for 4 months straight or I wouldn't be able to "walk" at graduation. (HAHAHA) Alumni_in_contact: Melissa Elkins (Johnson) Recently: Audreanna Jarwin and Elaine Formica I just saw Bree Bassett at the Dollar Tree on Arden and she just had twins!!!! comments: I hope that everyone in the class of 1994 lives every day to its fullest. Life is too short to remain bitter, angry or sad. Keep smiling and I wish everyone the best that life has to offer. KINGS The WSJ had this interesting article about the Sacramento Kings. Go Kings! Troika of Europeans Are Hoping To Crown Sacramento at Last By MITCHEL BENSON Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Geoff Petrie was visiting Greece in the mid-1990s, scouting for basketball talent in the port city of Thessaloniki, when out of the corner of his eye he spotted "this young kid scrimmaging and scoring all these points and running around." At 17, the young man already was 6-foot-8 and played "an American-style game" with "quickness and speed," recalls Mr. Petrie, now an executive with the Sacremento Kings. He was a virtual unknown with an unpronounceable Yugoslavian name, Pedrag Stojakovic. Today, many basketball fans still might not recognize that name or be able to pronounce Stojakovic (it's STOY-ak-O-vich). But the 24-year-old all-star forward for the Kings, known simply as "Peja," is one of a troika of unsung European players who are helping to cultivate a high-speed, high-scoring game of winning basketball in California's agricultural heartland. In doing so, they've helped lead the Kings, 61-21, to the best record in the National Basketball Association this season. Mr. Stojakovic, joined by teammates Vlade Divac of the former Yugoslavia and Hidayet "Hedo" Turkoglu of Turkey, thrive on the Kings' hustling, collegiate brand of ball that celebrates the game's fundamentals -- dribbling, passing, team defense and long-range shooting. Those can be lost arts in an NBA dominated by slashing, one-on-one moves and gravity-defying dunks. The European troika is part of the supporting cast for the team's true superstar, 6-foot-10 forward Chris Webber. A four-time all-star, Mr. Webber, 29, signed a seven-year, $122.7 million contract last summer to play for Sacramento through the 2007-08 season, making him the Kings' highest paid player by far. While his scoring and rebounding are key to the team's success, the Kings don't always suffer without him, winning 19 of the 28 games this season when he was sidelined. By winning three-quarters of their 82 regular-season games and the NBA's Pacific Division, the Kings earned crucial home-court advantage throughout the NBA playoffs, which start Saturday. They also won the right to imagine a great dream come true: toppling their downstate nemesis, the reigning back-to-back NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Are they ready? "I should ask you, are they ready for us?" says Mr. Divac, the Kings' 7-foot-1 center, a couple of days before a Kings-Lakers game in late March. "We have a better record. Everything is in our hands." Indeed, on Oscar night last month, the big showdown in California wasn't in Hollywood but 350 miles northwest, at the deafening Arco Arena. It was Sacramento's 118th consecutive sold-out game. Basket for Basket The ball found its way into Mr. Divac's hands with just 1:19 left in the March 24 contest, and the visiting Lakers clinging to a one-point lead, 93-92. Hyped on national television as a battle for Best in the West, the game had seesawed all night, with the Kings' long-range sharpshooters matching the acrobatic grace of the Lakers' Kobe Bryant basket for basket. Mr. Divac, the 34-year-old bearded Yugoslav playing on his third NBA team in 13 seasons, clanged a shot off the rim but was fouled by Laker bigman Shaquille O'Neal, who committed his sixth and final foul. Mr. Divac walked slowly to the foul line for two free throws -- and a chance to put the Kings on top. The Kings' players set the tone all season with exhilarating teamwork on the court -- many Kings baskets are set up by three or four passes -- and unusual camaraderie off the court. "I'm happier than when I score when I see somebody else score from my pass," says Mr. Divac, who, for the fourth time, led the NBA this season in assists per game by a center. Unselfish Style The unselfish style is purely by design. Mr. Petrie, the former Princeton University and NBA star who built the team, scoured Europe's basketball leagues for players with sound fundamentals -- and salary demands more affordable than the astronomical sums commanded by NBA free agents. The league's highest-paid player this year is Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who is earning $22.4 million in the fourth year of a six-year, $126 million contract. By comparison, the Kings' European troika this season is earning a combined $16.7 million. Mr. Petrie first selected the 6-foot-9 Mr. Stojakovic for the Kings in the 1996 NBA draft, while he was still playing in Greece. He joined the team in 1998. Mr. Petrie picked up Mr. Divac (pronounced DEE-vats) in 1999 after two frustrating seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, and he discovered the 6-foot-8 Mr. Turkoglu (TURK-a-lou) back home in Turkey, signing him in 2000 as the first Turk to play in the NBA. The press conference announcing the deal was broadcast live throughout Turkey. Pro basketball "has gotten so drawn up with raw athleticism, at the expense of fundamentals," says Mr. Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations since 1994. "For the game to be played in its most enjoyable form, you have to be able to do the things well that happen a lot -- not just running and jumping but passing, dribbling and shooting." Stop, Drop and Flop Late in the first quarter of the Oscar-night game, Mr. O'Neal, the Lakers center, found himself alone under the Kings' basket. Mr. Divac and Kings forward Scott Pollard were lying lifeless on their backs beneath him. That's a signature Divac defense, refined since Mr. Divac's days as a 16-year-old pro player in Eastern Europe: a stop, drop and flop routine designed to bamboozle referees into believing an offensive player has illegally charged into a stationary defender. It's one of the reasons Los Angeles Clippers coach Alvin Gentry calls Mr. Divac "probably the smartest center in the league." The refs didn't fall for it this time, but the Kings' playacting got to Mr. O'Neal, compounding his frustration at the mounting foul calls against him on defense. He barked at the referees to make the Kings play on their feet. The team's owners, brothers Joe and Gavin Maloof, have vowed to build a championship team in Sacramento. The family is the largest shareholder of California's Wells Fargo Bank and the owner of the $265 million Palms hotel and casino in Las Vegas. They purchased a controlling stake in the Kings and their home court, Arco Arena, for $247 million in 1999. After heavy investments in payroll and arena improvements, the Maloofs have lost $15.5 million over the past three years, according to numbers supplied by the team. The Maloof brothers were as delirious as the fans when Mr. O'Neal sulked off the court after fouling out on Oscar night. Mr. Divac sank one of two free throws to tie the game, but after more heroics by Mr. Bryant, the Lakers led by a point, 97-96, with 5.2 seconds to go. The Kings passed the ball in to Mr. Webber, who forced up an off-balance shot with a Lakers defender in his face. The buzzer sounded. The shot didn't drop, but Mr. Webber did, to his hands and knees. The Lakers won. In Las Vegas, top oddsmakers say they're offering roughly a three-to-one payoff to those who bet the Kings to take the NBA crown this year; the Lakers, perennial favorites, are even money. INTERNET ReplayTV users found guilty until proven innocent: The Honorable Charles F. Eick, a federal magistrate in Los Angeles, has ordered SonicBlue to surveil its ReplayTV digital video recorder users and turn over information about how they use the devices to the film studios and television networks suing it for contributing to copyright infringement. Every show ReplayTV users record, every commercial they skip and every program they send to a friend is to be noted to determine the extent to which ReplayTV 4000 permits consumers to purloin copyrighted programming. "It's an incredible invasion of privacy," Fred von Lohmann, an intellectual property expert for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told The Mercury News. "But second -- and equally important -- is what the Electronic Frontier Foundation and others have been saying was going to happen now for some time. Basically, under the guise of copyright laws, courts are going to be put in a position of telling technology companies how to build their products." Kristine Lester said Thursday that school officials told her that her name would not be on the ballot because only males can run for king and only females can run for queen. "I just wanted to do something different," said Lester, who is openly gay and plans to wear a tuxedo at Saturday's prom. "I'm not the feminine type to run for queen." Lester said she believes the school is discriminating against her because of her sexual orientation. Officials with San Juan Unified School District back Encina Principal Myrtle Berry's decision and denied there was any discrimination involved. "We don't discriminate," said district spokeswoman Deidra Powell. Congratulations to Candy Mleczko 94, who is the FIRST alumni to rsvp for this year's homecoming party!
