From: Harlan Lau Date: Tue Apr 9, 2002 10:29 pm Subject: Alumni challenge update (free) ENCINA ALUMNI, I'm also sending this update to the class lists as there is some new important information about the alumni challenge to disseminate. THE GAME IS FREE As you may know, admission to the Alumni Challenge was $20 before April 5th and is now $25 for adults. This price included the campus tour, a delicious catered dinner, door prizes and the alumni challenge basketball game. The goal of the Alumni Challenge was and is, to raise money for Encina! We raised over $15,000 last year and the goal this year was to equal or exceed that amount. Frankly, I didn't think it was possible since last year we had some megapledges which seemed unlikely to repeat. But then Paul Bonderson 70 challenged Encina alumni to pledge and said that he would match all funds raised by the alumni challenge up to $10,000, then $15,000. Thank you Mister Bonderson! After an email blitz, the floodgates opened wide and pledges have rained down in a way which makes me proud to be an Encina alumni. You alumni have made some incredibly generous pledges in supporting Encina and I want you to take a bow ! And for those of you who haven't pledged, it's not too late! If the alumni team scores 74 points like they did last year, we are on track to raise close to $30,000 from the fixed pledges and per point pledges and individual pledges alone, not counting the money from admission. That's a lot of car washes folks... We have greatly exceeded the original fundraising goal and in the spirit making the alumni challenge as accessible to as many alumni as possible, we have decided to make admission to the alumni challenge game FREE to alumni and their families and friends. We hope that by doing so, folks who were hesitant to spend $20-25 dollars to attend, will come out and bring their families to cheer for the alumni team. In fact, bring along some of your doubting friends from other high schools and let them see what Encina alumni can do! We are the Apaches/Bulldogs, and no one could be prouder, and if you don't believe us, we'll yell a little louder! Those who have already RSVPed and sent in their money have two options. First, they can come and take the campus tour, enjoy a catered dinner of prime rib and turkey and have the chance to win a door prize while enjoying the camaraderie of their classmates before the game. Second, they can give ALL this up and attend just the game and we will refund their money. We hope that those of you who have already RSVPed and paid will not select this option, but we offer it in fairness and thank you so much for RSVPing on time and making an early commitment. And for those of you who have not RSVPed and would still like to participate in the tour or dinner, we should have plenty of food so come and pay at the door. So no excuses now! We have your money! And now we want you! Bring your family and friends and come to the Alumni Challenge game on Friday. Our old guys will be going up against an Encina varsity team who went to the divisional finals and they will need all the support we can give them! Wear your Encina letter jackets, sweatshirts and gym clothes. Wear red and gold and be prepared to yell and scream for the team. But be there! RSVPs are still appreciated so I can keep the class lists updated with who is coming... SPECIAL GUEST Christine Kojima wrote: I would like to pledge $1.00 per point for the alumni...........I hope to be there to see the game. I just got an offer I couldn't refuse.... She is going on the condition that I sit next to her at the game; which of course is my honor. I hope everyone who was in her class will stop by and say hi. I have called a few people and it seems that they have previous engagements; especially those who are in the tax business. Maybe next year the game could be scheduled AFTER the April 15th tax deadline. Really looking forward to this Friday, will be a great way to celebrate my 41st birthday. ( Damn, didn't realize 41 looked so bad in print ) Since the class of '79 was by far the best class to ever grace the halls of Encina; I have but one thing to say to my fellow classmates~ Put up and show up! Don't let Totaro out do you!!!! Mark LaCoste 85 wrote: I just received this latest update, and have to say this is great news. All of us have that one teacher that really changed the way we think, look at life, or somehow helped us make the right decisions. Mrs. Kojima was that teacher for me. I was in one of her P.E. classes as a freshman, german class as a sophmore and junior, and was also a teachers aid in one of her spanish classes my senior year. She really helped me maintain focus on my studies and my future during those great years. Thank you Mrs. Kojima, you will always be my teacher of the year! Hope to see you all there when we show these youngsters how Apaches play basketball....... Mark A. He lost my keys one day and he is lucky he is alive to play basketball. Dave Niello 72 wrote: All the boys in the class of '72 knew Frau Kojima was the best looking teacher at Encina. And if she is going to pledge money for the alumni game, then I will too, darnit. Count me in for $1.25 per point. And I challenge all the boys in our great class to do the same. If you thought Frau Kojima was a fox, put the money up! Frau Kojima wrote: Hey, you are not going to get much money on that one!!!!! I am stunned that these students have decided to participate on my behalf. It is interesting to read how they remember me. Maybe I shouldn't go to the game, they will be sorely disappointed. No laughing............. Carolos X Montoya 76 wrote: IF C. KOJIMA IS IN, YOU CAN COUNT ME IN. 76 IS OBVIOUSLY ON THE SIDELINES HERE. WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET THE REST OF YOU TO SUPPORT A GREAT CAUSE? I'M IN FOR A $1.50 PER POINT. Frau Kojima wrote: Wow, I am surprised that these students remember me. I certainly remember Carlos Montoya, Dave Niello and Mark LaCoste quite well. Had I known I had such followers, I would have emailed sooner. This is soooooooooo much fun. Is there special seating for faculty? Senior citizens? PLEDGE SUMMARY When I sent out the last update we were at $137.10 per alumni point with $2415 in fixed pledges. Today's total is $159.00 per alumni point with fixed pledges of $3365. That is $318/pt x 74 = $23,532 in per point pledges when matching funds are added. And $6730 in fixed pledges with matching funds. The total is $30,262 but this amount will depend on the number of alumni points. And this amount does not include pledges for individual points or admissions. If you have made a fixed pledge, please make your check out to "Encina High School Booster Club" and send it in as soon as possible to: Encina High School Attention: Heddy Crowder 1400 Bell Street Sacramento,CA 95825 ALUMNI CHALLENGE BAND YEAHHHH! Where are all the great musicians that Encina's music program produced over the last 40 years? We need the involvement of just a few folks with the connections to recruit their musical buddies. I know we must have a number of talented women alumni who could take on the women's varsity team ( I am making the rash assumption that with the changes mandated by Title IX there is an Encina women's varsity team). I don't count myself as a talented athlete, as my interests are more along noncompetitive sports. ( So yes Ken L., I would have to cheer on the sidelines, but only for basketball !). I know we have great women players out there who could compete. When we were at Encina (back in the oooooold days) the support for women's sports was miniscule, and there weren't many opportunites for women to play competitively. However, 30 years after passage of Title IX legislation, the number of women in competitive sports has mushroomed, along with the caliber of women in sports. Title IX missed most of our generation, but it has empowered the next one. I know this won't happen this year, but next year I would like to see both a women's and men's alumni challenge games back to back. I'll even come down for it if the schedule works out. So I am throwing out this challenge to the organizers of the Alumni Challenge- For the 2003 Alumni Challenge, I pledge $100 to the Women's Alumni Team to play the Women's Varsity Team, in honor of all the daughters of Encina alumni. Anyone else out there willing to match me? " I am keeping track of women who express an interest in playing on the women's alumni team against the Lady Bulldogs in some future event. For details about the Alumni Challenge 2002 along with the list of current RSVPs and pledges: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02.htm NOTES Last year the week before the alumni challenge our host shut down the website when they found we weren't paying them anything. That was fun. But now we have our own webserver! Last night, I installed some new software on my main PC (the one used to update the website) and my system is totally hosed. It won't boot and all I get is the infamous blue screen of death. This is especially inconvenient since I am in the middle of doing my taxes and I want to update the website. So far tonight I've reinstalled Windows 2000 and am restoring my disk from a backup. Fortunately I have up to date backups so with any luck, I'll be back up later tonight. In the meantime, thank god we have more than one PC at home. Harlan Lau '73 Encina HS alumni webmaster www.encinahighschool.com
