From: Harlan Lau Date: Wed Apr 3, 2002 11:38 pm Subject: Alumni Challenge update (thank you) ENCINA ALUMNI, MUST....NOT....PRESS....SEND...BUTTON.... Sorry about the recent email blitz. I always get carried away in the weeks leading up to the alumni challenge and the homecoming party. Hang in there for another week or so and things will go back to normal. I'm making an effort to restrain myself. I haven't sent a blanket email in several hours. Those of you who knew me at Encina know that I am not a rah rah type of person. This fundraising stuff is more like working the crowd on a PBS pledge night. I always change the channel myself. Of course we are members of the PBS stations already so that's okay . Anyway, as I've said before, I hate this fundraising stuff. The ONLY reason I do it is because... IT'S FOR THE KIDS. Although we always lose a few folks who unsubscribe from the mailing lists during "pledge week", the mailing lists have proven to be an amazingly effective way to reach Encina alumni. Although I'm sure some of you automatically delete anything to do with the alumni challenge, many of you have responded and have pledged and supported this Encina fundraising effort. Still with me. On Sunday night we were at $28 per alumni point. Close your eyes and take a guess at the total this evening, three days later. $72.75 PER ALUMNI POINT. YOU GUYS ARE TOTALLY AWESOME. YOU ROCK. I'll admit I had my doubts about even making $50 a point last week, but you guys blew the doors off. I'm so proud of you all. What other school could do something like this? Aren't you proud when you tell friends from other high schools about Encina? With Paul Bonderson's matching funds we are at $145.50 per alumni point. That's about $150 for a free throw, $300 for a jump shot and $450 for each three pointer. My knees would be shaking. If the alumni team matches their score of 74 points from last year that's almost $11,000. This amazing total is the result of pledges from numerous alumni from many classes. But I would like to acknowledge three exceptional pledges we received today. Doug Dohring '76 put us over the top of our $50/point goal. First with his pledge of $5/alumni point. Then when he raised his pledge to $12/alumni point so we could meet the $50/point goal. Karl Schnaidt '91 put the class of 91 on the board with his pledge of $12 per point. Karl wrote: "I want to make a pledge for $12 per point. I have a lot of great memories at Encina and I want to help out." Karl, when you help out, you really help out. Steve Daniel '73 chimed in from the East coast: Please put me down for $5.00 an Alumni point and keep me posted on how the game goes! Will not be able to attend as I'm down in Naples Florida enjoying the Sunshine! We have an additional $1425 in fixed pledges, for a total of $2850 with Paul's matching funds. We also have individual point pledges and of course, the admission money for those who attend the dinner and game. Depending on the number of alumni points, we are on track to raise close to $15,000 for Encina from the alumni challenge. This is a remarkable achievement since we are lacking the megapledges which we had last year. You guys are terrific. Now that we have reached $72.75 per alumni point, let's set a new goal of $100/point. Outrageous? I would have said so last week. We have 15 classes who have not pledged yet. Just a $2/alumni pt per unpledged class and we are all but there. Can we do it again? Bob and Steve asked me to send out a special email announcing that the... DEADLINE IS EXTENDED Bob Goosmann '74 and Steve Palmer '74 have extended the early bird deadline to Friday, April 5th. RSVPs submitted by Friday will get the $20/person price! I think we actually have more pledges than rsvps at this point. We need alumni in the stands to cheer on the alumni team. This year they will be playing their hearts out against a varsity team which went to their divisional finals. It's going to be a war out there on the floor. We need to fill those stands. You can support Encina by rsvping and attending in person and also have the chance to win one of the cool raffle prizes... RAFFLE Julie Eissinger Meador 74 wrote: Two more donations in for the Alumni Challenge! Margie Marston '65 will be donating a wine basket and Kathleen Rayfuse Calcidise '63 is donating a new Apple 5 gig IPOD Kathleen is COO for Apple Retail and is responsible for all the retail stores which Apple has been opening around the country. The Ipod's retail for $399. Thanks to Kathie for this nice donation. I understand Apple will support the Ipod on PCs too in the near future. If you cannot pledge money, perhaps you can donate a gift for us to raffle off? Many of you have your own business. Please consider donation a service or something related to your business. BAND Yon Gomez '81 wrote: We need participants for the pep band @ the Alumni Challenge! If you know musicians from other classes, forward this to them! Where are the "Bell Street House Wreckers"? It's getting late and drums alone will not make a very musical pep band! If you put the word out to all the classes, I will be a contact person, and I'll even try to put this thing together! So, you put out the word and I'll wait to hear from all those great former Encina musicians who want to impress their children. Tell them to break out the brass polish and soak their reeds we have music to play!!!! I will match all funds raised by the challenge, dollar for dollar up to $10,000. Take advantage of this opportunity to make your dollars count for Encina, it's for the kids! Paul Bonderson, class of '70" So if you pledge $1 for each alumni pledge, Paul will match that with an additional $1. If you pledge $100, Paul will match that with an additional $100. I hope Paul Bonderson 70's generous pledge to match all funds raised by the challenge will inspire more of you to make a pledge and support Encina. Do it for the kids!
