I'm working with AT&T and Sportsmark as the staff manager for the US Olympic Athlete and Family Hospitality Program. We provide a "home away from home" for the athlete and four family members. They get all sorts of goodies, tickets, food, and TLC. It is great and I'll be in Salt Lake for the entire month of February. I really was looking forward to it. Went last year, and, had a really good time. Saw people like Kurt Pearsall, Toni Blass and John Nunez. Ahhhh, the m emories of Howe Ave. School. Was hoping to see Pepai Flack.... Even though I cannot make the game I do want to make a contribution. It was so close last year, I think everyone was surprised and so, I feel pretty sure we will win this year! Go Apaches! Everybody GO! Can't wait to hear the outcome! Will talk to ya soon.. ALUMNI CHALLENGE Encina Alumni Challenge 2002 Date: Friday, April 12, 2002 Time: 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Cost: TBD, probably about the same as last year Remember last year's Alumni Challenge? Our alumni basketball team almost beat the Encina Varsity team in a close and exciting game. We raised over $20,000 for Encina programs, had a great dinner, enjoyed a wonderful Alumni Band and saw old friends and the campus. If you missed it, you really missed out! The Second Annual Alumni Challenge will be even bigger and better with a rematch of the Alumni and Varsity teams, great prizes, an even better meal, and more fun! More details will follow soon, but clear your calendar for April 12 and come join us. Our goal is to raise more money and have more fun than we did at last year's event. For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Steve Palmer '74 at 530-676-2775 or spalmer@innotek.com, or Bob Goosmann '74 at magusbob@hotmail.com. For details about the Alumni Challenge 2002: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02.htm ENCINA BOOSTER CLUB The money raised by the Alumni Challenge goes to the Encina Booster Club. For those of you who are wondering what the Booster Club uses the money for, here is a message from Encina community liason Heddy Crowder which details some of the items the Booster Club has funded and also describes the wish lists of some of Encina's faculty. "Hello From the Bulldogs, Encina has pockets of money that can be used for many things, however they do not include sports, so as a rule more of the Booster Club dollars are allocated to various sports. Here are some things that Booster Club has paid for the last couple of years: transportation to and from games(for atheletes and cheerleaders) and football camp, football and basketball uniforms, redo the baseball diamonds, Ashland Shakespearean Festival trip for Visual and Performing Arts, sent 2 basketball players to a very selective by invitation only camp, fund the all sports bar-b-que, seed $ for the football and basketball snack bars, stimulated Encina pride with T-shirts and sweatshirts, Homecoming activities including the Alumni functions (security and custodians), Lincoln CIF dinner for coaches. We tried to hold back some $ from last year, because we didn't know how much we would need for the staff wish lists. As for a wish list, I have MANY requests for $. I'll highlight them here, and attach copies of the original requests submitted to me. Dave Underwood, (graphic arts and yearbook teacher) would like a high end computer for yearbook and Unleashed (Encina magazine), Robin Arnold (English/Avid) guest speakers, Mike Stevens (art) $ for Encina Art Gallery Opening Receptions, Emilio Ruiz(Math) $ for a bus for students to participate in a Math and Physics day, Stephanie Woo (Business) Camcorders, etc. for EBS (Encina Broadcasting System), Phyllis Grant (music-Visual/Performing Arts) Stereo Equipment, Sarah Martasian (SAP-Student Assistance Program) $ for the PALS luncheons held once a month, Becky Hurley(English/Student Government) $ for a refillable hellium tank for student government and $ for "Every Fifteen Minutes"(a program about drinking and driving) Heddy Crowder Community Liaison Encina High School Voice-916.971.5891 Fax-916.971.7555" KEN LEVY 71 Russ Levy '73, Ken Levy 71's brother, wrote: Dear Fellow classmates: This year in July will mark the 22nd anniversary of my brother, Ken Levy's (Encina Class of 1971) passing after a three year battle fighting Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). Ken was my mentor, best friend and source of inspiration both in his life before he contracted the disease and during his three year heroic fight of it, that unfortunately ended in his death. Bone marrow transplants back then, were largely unsuccessful and a match amongst the family and friends was not to be had. His last call to me was one of apologizing for all he had put the family through. That was so like Ken, always thinking of others over himself. Three days later he was gone. At the time he was going through his battle, the survival rate for adults was less then 15% and children was rising from 53 to 70%. Today, through research and technology, survival rates for adults is approaching 50% and is over 80% in children, a phenomenal increase!!! In honor and in memory of my brother, I will be participating in this year's "Team In Training" Century ride being put on by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The ride this year will go completely around Lake Tahoe located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California/Nevada on the 2nd of June and has an elevation gain/loss of over 2,400 feet. My part in this endeavor is two fold, one to train on a regular basis so I will be in shape to complete the ride in one day and the more important role of raising donations for the society so that research and the other services (Public Education, Patient Aid Program, Community Service and Professional Education) provided by the society can continue. As a member of the Team in Training team, I have pledged to complete the ride and to raise at least $3,500 to support cancer research while I train for the event. Over 75% of the donations I raise go directly to research and patient services that can help win the battle against leukemia and other related cancers. I need to raise 25% of the pledged amount on or before March 13th, 2002 and the balance no later than May 14th, 2002. The sooner the funds are raised, the sooner they can be applied to the must needed research and other programs overseen by the society and my personal goal is to have the total minimum raised by tax day, April 15th, 2002. I am reaching out today to you and asking for your help and support so we can achieve this goal together. Please help me meet my financial commitment to raise at least $3,500 and hopefully a lot more. Any amount you can give will really help and is greatly appreciated. If you are able to donate please send your donation to my home at: 16827 420th Avenue SE, North Bend, WA 98045. Training for the ride will be a challenge for me as the last time I rode around Lake Tahoe it took me two days and I was 15, not well into my 40's however, that is nothing compared to the fight that Ken fought and that others face today in their battle against cancer. Thank you in advance for considering a contribution and I look forward to hearing from you on same. Will keep you up to date on the progress I am making toward my goal. Thanks again for your support. HUMOR Beijing (SatireWire.com) - Bitter after being snubbed for membership in the "Axis of Evil," Libya, China, and Syria today announced they had formed the "Axis of Just as Evil," which they said would be way eviler than that stupid Iran-Iraq-North Korea axis President Bush warned of his State of the Union address. Axis of Evil members, however, immediately dismissed the new axis as having, for starters, a really dumb name. "Right. They are Just as Evil... in their dreams!" declared North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. "Everybody knows we're the best evils... best at being evil... we're the best." Diplomats from Syria denied they were jealous over being excluded, although they conceded they did ask if they could join the Axis of Evil. "They told us it was full," said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. "An Axis can't have more than three countries," explained Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. "This is not my rule, it's tradition. In World War II you had Germany, Italy, and Japan in the evil Axis. So you can only have three. And a secret handshake. Ours is wicked cool." THE AXIS PANDEMIC International reaction to Bush's Axis of Evil declaration was swift, as within minutes, France surrendered. Elsewhere, peer-conscious nations rushed to gain triumvirate status in what became a game of geopolitical chairs. Cuba, Sudan, and Serbia said they had formed the Axis of Somewhat Evil, forcing Somalia to join with Uganda and Myanmar in the Axis of Occasionally Evil, while Bulgaria, Indonesia and Russia established the Axis of Not So Much Evil Really As Just Generally Disagreeable. With the criteria suddenly expanded and all the desirable clubs filling up, Sierra Leone, El Salvador, and Rwanda applied to be called the Axis of Countries That Aren't the Worst But Certainly Won't Be Asked to Host the Olympics; Canada, Mexico, and Australia formed the Axis of Nations That Are Actually Quite Nice But Secretly Have Nasty Thoughts About America, while Spain, Scotland, and New Zealand established the Axis of Countries That Be Allowed to Ask Sheep to Wear Lipstick. "That's not a threat, really, just something we like to do," said Scottish Executive First Minister Jack McConnell. While wondering if the other nations of the world weren't perhaps making fun of him, a cautious Bush granted approval for most axes, although he rejected the establishment of the Axis of Countries Whose Names End in "Guay," accusing one of its members of filing a false application. Officials from Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chadguay denied the charges. Israel, meanwhile, insisted it didn't want to join any Axis, but privately, world leaders said that's only because no one asked them.
