CLASS MAILING LISTS Recently, several of the classes, including the class of 62, have been having lively discussions on their mailing lists. Gary Hastings 62 wrote: "The advent of personal computers and the Internet has created an amazing phenomenon. More and more people who were together for 4 short years 40 years ago are now once again communicating even more easily than they did those many years ago. The number of people watching and reading these conversations seems to be growing daily. I can’t think of anything that is even close to what is happening here. I’m sure other classes and generations are experiencing the same thing, but we were the first class that went 4 full years. Remember 1962? 1962! 40 years ago! Before the Beatles, before the drug culture, before the Summer of Love. And now here we are chatting and talking and joking and recalling memories as though it was yesterday. “Hey, I remember you”, “Hey, remember the Senior Lawn” “Remember that big Bonneville that we cruised K in” How can those four years so long ago remain so vivid in our memories. How can we still have pictures in our minds of all the people we made friends with in those days? And just think of all the classes after us who are also contacting old friends and reminiscing. My God, how many people have gone to Encina, a small army, no a BIG army. If we wanted to unite we could elect a state senator. Maybe a president. I wonder if this phenomenon is happening all across the country. Do El Camino, Mira Loma, San Juan and Bella Vista have Web Sites? I am just amazed… Gary Hastings" Randi Muller Kemper 62 wrote: "Gary what a great letter! It is so true. I have been enjoying hearing from everyone so much. It is truly amazing. I laughed when you mentioned cruising K. My that was a real enjoyable part of my life at that time. It was so much fun, talking to others and never getting out of your car, so we really kept a safe distance from everyone. Sure glad gas was 25 cents a gallon!. I thought that was high! hehehhehe I do hope other people are doing the same thing. It is nice to see and hear about people from the past. We tend to forget how important it was to us at one time to see the same familiar faces everyday. Most of us went to the neighborhood schools and saw the same kids everyday for like 8 years. That is something that many kids don't experience today. We were so used to eachother at Pope Ave school that we really didn't appreciate at the time how fortunate we were to have such a tight knit little class. One of my best friends now is a girl who went to Pope (a year ahead of us) and we had not seen each other in like over 30 years when we met again by chance here in Tucson. Didn't know each other too well then but that nice little tie has been a good bond. Randi" In answer to your question Gary, I an not aware of any websites for El Camino, Mira Loma, San Juan or Bella Vista. Encina rules! HUMOR CONGRESS Sends Bill to President: "AMERICANS WITH NO ABILITIES ACT" WASHINGTON, DC--On Tuesday, Congress approved the Americans With No Abilities Act, sweeping new legislation that provides benefits and protection for more than 135 million talent-less Americans. The act, which supporters hope will be signed into law by President Bush , is being hailed as a major victory for the millions upon millions of U.S. citizens who lack any real skills or uses. "Roughly 50 percent of Americans--through no fault of their own--do not possess the talent necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society," said co-sponsors, Tom Dachle and Ted Kennedy, longtime ANA supporters. "Their lives are futile hamster-wheel existences of unrewarding, dead-end busywork: xeroxing documents written by others, fulfilling mail-in rebates for Black & Decker toaster ovens, and processing bureaucratic forms that nobody will ever see. Sadly, for these millions of non-abled Americans, the American dream of working hard and moving up through the ranks is simply not a reality." Under the Americans With No Abilities Act, more than 25 million important-sounding "middle man" positions will be created in the white-collar sector for non-abled persons, providing them with an illusory sense of purpose and ability. Mandatory, non-performance based raises and promotions will also be offered to create a sense of upward mobility for even the most unremarkable, utterly replaceable employees. The legislation also provides corporations with incentives to hire non-abled workers, including tax breaks for those who hire one non-germane worker for every two talented hirees. Finally, the Americans With No Abilities Act also contains tough new measures to prevent discrimination against the non-abled by banning prospective employers from asking such job-interview questions as, "What can you bring to this organization?" and, "Do you have any special skills that would make you an asset to this company?" "As a non-abled person, I frequently find myself unable to keep up with co-workers who have something going for them," said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as an unessential filing clerk at a Miami tile wholesaler last month because she repeatedly mis-billed customers or had product shipments sent to the wrong state. "This new law should really help people like me." With the passage of the Americans With No Abilities Act, Gertz and millions of other untalented, inessential citizens may finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. Said Daschle: "It is our duty, both as lawmakers and as human beings, to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her lack of value to society, some sort of space to take up in this great nation." NETFLIX From the New York times... Thursday, August 16, 2001 Why Netflix Is Cool When I tell people what I do for a living, the first question most people ask is: "Do you get to keep all those DVD players, computers and palmtops you review?" Keep them? Ha! Now THAT would be a cushy job! No, keeping the stuff I review, or even accepting discounts, would be an invitation to conflict of interest -- and The Times, like most good publications, is especially careful about avoiding conflict of interest on the part of its writers. Even so, this week's e-mail column is, at its core, a blatantly self-interested missive. It'll take me a minute to explain why. At a recent dinner with some old magazine-industry friends, I was amazed to discover that three of them were all raving fans of something called Netflix.com. These buddies were using lingo and exchanging jokes that went right over my uninitiated head. Turns out Netflix is a DVD rental service. For $20 per month, you can rent as many DVD movies as you can stand to watch. You can even keep them as long as you want, with a maximum of three movies checked out at a time; if you want to keep "The Mummy" out all year long, go for it. As soon as you return one, Netflix automatically sends you the next movie on your wish list (which you maintain on its Web site). What's irresistible about this deal is that there are no late fees. There are no shipping fees, either; Netflix pays the postage both ways, and even includes a return mailer. If you return your DVD's Monday morning, your next set is usually waiting for you Friday, in time for the weekend. In response to the success of Netflix, Blockbuster promptly whipped together a similar smorgasbord deal -- but it still imposes time limits and late fees. (No wonder; Blockbuster gets about 20 percent of its income from late fees.) And with Blockbuster, of course, you still have to drive to the store to rent and return the movies. Oh, and Netflix stocks about 10,000 DVD titles; at my local Blockbuster, I'm lucky if they've got a couple hundred DVD's on the shelf. (It should be noted, however, that you don't always get the Netflix movie you want right away; you may have to content yourself with older movies until the new release you've requested becomes available.) But Blockbuster isn't the only deal that Netflix blows out of the water. I know people who pay $80 per month for movie channels -- and they don't get the Netflixesque freedom of scheduling, freedom of movie selection or freedom of pausing the show. Nor do they get the generally superior video quality of DVD's or the "Making Of" documentary extras that usually come on DVD movie discs. I'm plugging Netflix for two reasons. First, it's a shining example of a dot-com that's still in business because it's an undisputable consumer win, not just a greed play. Second, I'm determined to spread the word about this ingenious program in every way I can. Netflix has 300,000 subscribers, but needs another 200,000 to break even -- and I don't ever want it to go away. Maybe that's a conflict of interest, but I plug with a clean conscience; in this deal, everybody wins. Visit David Pogue on the Web at DavidPogue.com. Philip Pullman has an outstanding "Dark Materials" trilogy consisting of "Golden Compass", "Subtle Knife" and "Amber Spyglass". I recommend this for both children (4th-5th and above) and adults.
