Date: Fri May 4, 2001 3:32 pm Subject: Encina Update (webcast/challenge/per point/pledges/cheerleaders/faculty/team/band/details/rsvps/pledges/fame/dyer kelly/kojima/reunions/siblings/bios/obits/homecoming/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week's update is sponsored by Gayle Kernick. Gayle taught social studies at Encina from 1960-70 and returned as vice principal from 1987-1989. Thanks! I messed up on my interpretation of Keith DeLuca Paulsen 81's pledge. Keith's pledge was for new rsvps, not existing rsvps. However, Keith has extended his pledge to rsvps received by May 9th! Keith also contacted the Bee. I talked with Jennifer Sparks from the Bee on Monday and I believe we'll get some coverage in the neighbor section. Let me know if you see anything! WEBCAST Kevin Boehl 81 suggested we webcast the game on the net. WE DO NOT have the equipment or resources to do this. If YOU do and are interesting in helping out, please write. CHALLENGE As of this afternoon we have approximately 126 rsvps for the alumni challenge next Friday! Let me remind you to please send in your checks right away if you haven't already paid. We need a firm headcount for the caterer. Make your checks payable to "Encina High School Booster Club" and mark them attention Becky Hurley. Send them to: Encina High School 1400 Bell Street Sacramento,CA 95825 We still have a chance to reach the goal of 200 attendees. Those of you who have rsvped, please consider bringing your families and make a few calls to your procastinating classmates. Our total per point pledge stands at $245.43, within spitting distance of the $250 per point goal. Today Lynne Gile Tracy 78 added her pledge of $2 per alumni point. Many classes have pledged their classmates on the team. Each point scored by Chuck Armstrong 77 is worth an additional $30 per point for a total of $275.43 per Armstrong point. If anyone wishes to change their pledge from a classmate to any alumni, we would certainly appreciate it! We have numerous other pledges for individuals, cheerleaders and even blocked shots. In addition, we have received many generous donations from alumni who are unable or too far away to attend in person. We would like to thank everyone who has rsvped, made donations or pledged for their support and generosity! The early bird deadline was May 1st, so the cost has gone up to $25 per person, $12.50 for children under 9. Even if you can't attend in person, your donation would be greatly appreciated! Please spread the word among classmates who are not on the net and do not receive the updates and aren't aware of the alumni challenge! PER POINT PLEDGES The total per alumni point pledge stands at $245.43, with only another $4.57 to reach our goal of $250 per alumni point. $100 : Paul Bonderson 70 50 : Ronald Morgan 70 1.71 : Scott Plotkin 71 1 : Harlan Lau 73 1 : Linda Barber-Zollinger Hammock 74 1 : Steve Palmer 74 1 : Denni Schwartz Mador 74 1 : Steve Walter 74/75 75 : Gerry Coppock 78 1 : Tom Dugally 78 2 : Lynne Gile Tracy 78 1 : Carol Markell Keller 78 1 : Dan Mayes 78 (first to make this pledge) 1 : Marvin Gee 79 1 : Joe Niederberger 79 1 : Christy Cooper 80 1 : Kevin Boehl 81 1.85 : Lance Ballance 85 1.87 : Steve Knowlton 87 1 : James Bui 90 --------- $245.43 What happened to the 60s? PLEDGES/RSVPS Here are some of the more interesting pledges and rsvps... "Hey Harlan - My name is Georgianna Marie. I was Student Body President at Encina in 1980. I'm getting all my Encina news second-hand from Henry Meier - he forwarded me some of the emails about the basketball game. Can you add me to the donation list? Here's my pledge: $3 per point scored by any '80 alumni (just to outdo L Rose's pledge) AND $5 for every point scored by Henry Meier (just to give him a hard time) AND $50 if David Robinson (1979) plays in the band wearing a 78-80 cheerleader outfit (just for the hell of it) (I don't have Dave's email address - you'll need to alert him about that pledge.) Also, can you add me to the email list so I get the updates from you? Thanks. Georgianna Marie Class of 1980" Bill Farley 77 wrote: "My two daughters are going to join me for the event. I will paypal tonight. When you average out all the donations at this point, you are over $250 per point. I have to keep my individual donation to Chuck because it might help him get the ball more. I like the way the donations have evolved. Everyone can be creative and make up their own approach. I know its difficult to keep track of, but it makes very interesting to read your updates. People trying to find cheerleading costumes. Children dressing up as mascots. The "blocked shot" pledge is fantastic. All of this energy surronding the school, the band, the individual classes - it is all very exciting. Could you have ever imagined that your website would create this much electricity for the school. Your site made it possible for Bob and Steve to transform a great idea into a great success. You should be very pleased with your contribution to the school. Keep up the great work!!" Jon Dahlberg 71 wrote: "Talked w/dad tonight. He wants to see Chris play ball. He talked Mom into going too. Two more for dinner! The check is in the mail...Jon. Dahlberg '71" ALUMNI CHEERLEADERS We've located a costume for Terri Jurich 74 and Kathy Webber Gill 82 said she thinks her old costume is at her mom's house. Irene Birchfield Campbell 68 wrote: "Hi Harlan! Not sure if we can attend the Encina fundraiser on 5/11. Waiting to find out the Kings playoff schedule. If we do come I will come as the Apache mascot. More later. Thanks, Irene Campbell GO KINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!" My sister Laurie Lau 77 wrote: "If you find a volunteer, they can use my songleader sweater and skirt which are pretty generic and look like a cheerleader outfit. The sweater is maroon with an Apache/BIG E emblem on front; the skirt is maroon with yellow and white inverted pleats. The sweater is a 36 and the skirt is size 11." To which Terri Jurich 74 wrote: "Perfect for me!!! Let me know how to arrange pick up and return... Thanks Laurie Terri Jurich Howard Class of 74 And be assured....ALL those tucks will never show..!! Ha ha" I asked Max Fuentes 78 whether his wife Terri Durham Fuentes 79 would wear her cheerleader outfit to the game since Gerry Coppock 78 pledged $100 if Terri cheerleads and $50 is Max does too. Max wrote: "Harlan, The only place Terri wears the cheerleading outfit is at home and the same goes for me. Ha,ha. However, we plan on attending the game. Max" Polly Pickens 82 wrote: "Hey, Kathy, I can't make it to the Alumni challenge but you are welcome to wear my songleader sweater and skirt. Georginna Marie 80 pledged "$50 if David Robinson (1979) plays in the band wearing a cheerleader outfit (just for the hell of it)" Haven't heard from Mr Robinson but Polly's outfit is available Dave... FACULTY RSVPS Eric Dahlin wrote regarding the alumni challenge classroom tour: "Mike Stevens And Eric Dahlin will have there rooms open from 4:30 till 6:00!" Do we have any alumni who would like to "adopt" Mike and Eric for dinner and the game? ALUMNI BASKETBALL TEAM The alumni basketball team roster is: Bob Goosman 74 Chuck Armstrong 77 Kim Tierney 78 (out due to Kings playoff game same night) Chris Dahlberg 80 Henry Meier 80 Scott Simon 80 Geoff Shumway 89 Jason Talanian 90 I hope that alumni will come out and support their classmates at the game. There is a reference to how the group "Glad" was formed. Actually, the initial group was a folk group called Tim, Tom, and Ron (Ron was best know for ironing his hair back then). About the time the surf music was in its final stages, a kid named George Hullin was beating on a table and asked to join the group. They had their debut at Loretta HS on Bell Ave. as the Contenders. They also played at the opening of the Howe Avenue pool in 1963. George was the "trumpet" heard on their first recording as well. Tiny Moore had a shop on El-Camino were Tom Philips and Tim taught music as well. It was said Tiny was Tim's dad (don't know for sure but that is what was said). Tim also released one album as "Timothy B. Schmidt". I do not know the circa for sure. My memory calls up the year 1987 but then one never knows about memories - I had graduated in 1968."
