I would like to encourage all of you to share your annual family holiday picture with your class mailing list. I really enjoy seeing pictures of alumni and their families and I'm sure your classmates will too. Just scan your picture in at 75dpi and mail it to your class mailing list! SPONSORS Hmmm, I seem to be running out of sponsors. Several of you indicated that you intended to make a contribution in support of the Homecoming party and Encina website. If you are still interested in contributing please send me your check... For those of you who are new, the Encina website is nonprofit and supported by the contributions of alumni and commissions from the Encina store. If you think the Encina website provides a useful service and are interested in supporting the website please let me know. Thanks! There is a list of past sponsors here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/sponsors.htm SENIOR GUIDE/FRESHMAN FEAST The Senior Guide/Freshman Feast was this past Monday, December 11th. Senior Guides is a great program that Encina has developed that pairs seniors with freshman to provide mentoring, friendship and guidance through their first year. Interested seniors apply to become guides, fill out an application and go through an oral interview to be accepted. All freshman have a guide, while each senior provides guidance to about 8-10 freshman. Pete Simon 77 wrote: "Thanks for bring this program to attention. Just to let you know, I mailed a check to the school for $200.00 I think it's great to hear about programs like this." Last week Dick Liden 63 contributed $500 on behalf of the class of 63 and Steve Palmer 74 pledged $150 on behalf of the class of 74. Steve Palmer 74 wrote: "The Senior Guides Feast was a great success! About 150 freshman came and had turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, cranberries, rolls, pies and more. The local Rotary Club (West Point) donated turkeys and helped prepare and serve. We had enough food that Coach Hibbard brought a bunch of his players over to help finish it off. We even had enough to send care packages home with many of the kids. (If anyone likes yams we have about 50 pounds left!!) Cooking of turkeys began in the home economics room at 6:00 am and continued until 4:00 pm when the kids were served. In all, 12 turkeys, 25 cans of corn, tons of mashed potatoes, yams and much more were cooked in the cafeteria kitchen. Terri Jurich ('74) took pictures as did Becky Hurley (teacher/activities director). I'll forward them electronically as soon as I have copies. Many thanks to all who contributed time and money to make this a successful event including: Dick Liden '63, Pete Simon '77, Terri Howard '74 (and her daughter Haley), Nancy Cooper Manly '71, Laura Simms '71, Lisa Ott-Williams '81, Sande Jaeke '74, Kathy Cooper Luken '66, Lynda Benvenuti Taylor '69. I used to watch him when he was in the little league that used to play at Sealy park across from Pope Ave School. I used to enjoy watching a lot of the guys there. That was when so many of us were real fans of the local little league. I never had a favorite team, just enjoyed them all." Greg Vitaich 62 wrote: "There is something very close to the heart that is stirred when hearing of classmates of 38 years ago. I can't quite describe it. But I know its something good because in my minds eye I still see Stan walking the halls of Encina laughing and talking to all of us. It must be something about the innocence of our youth and the recognition of our own mortality. I know I don't contribute much here but I do appreciate the efforts of all of you. Merry Christmas, Greg Vitaich" JUDITH COX 62 Sacramento Bee, Dec. 2, 1989 JUDITH A. For those of you doing your Christmas shopping on the net, please link your purchase to the Encina store, which is an affiliate of most of the popular internet stores like amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, buy.com, cdnow.com, dell.com, etc. It won't cost you anything but a little inconvenience and it will help defer the costs of maintaining the Encina website. Remember to do your online shopping early. Some stores won't guarantee Christmas delivery for orders after December 12th.
