Earlier this week I sent out Steve Palmer 74's email about the Encina senior guide program, asking for support for the freshman feast on December 11th. Here is one generous response from Dick Liden 63... THE RESPONSE "Harlan Send me some sort of bill for $500 and the class of '63 will cover it" Kudos to Dick Liden 63 for his school spirit and support of the present Encina students! I salute you! SENIOR GUIDE/FRESHMAN FEAST ** ALUMNI CHALLENGE ** December 11, 2000 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm Encina Cafeteria Senior Guides is a great program that Encina has developed that pairs seniors with freshman to provide mentoring, friendship and guidance through their first year. Interested seniors apply to become guides, fill out an application and go through an oral interview to be accepted. All freshman have a guide, while each senior provides guidance to about 8-10 freshman. At the last meeting of Senior Guides the idea of providing a feast to welcome freshman into the program was discussed. This would give freshman and seniors more contact with each other and provide for a way to celebrate the holidays. Many of the students do not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays in this way. You may have thought of lots of ways to help people during the holidays. This is one great way to help kids you know! Becky Hurley, Activities Director, called to see if alumni could help. After seeing the tremendous response and enthusiasm demonstrated at the Homecoming game, I told her that Encina alumni would love to be a part. The feast will provide full dinners for 225 freshman, senior guides and participating adults. The feast includes, turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, corn, cranberry sauce, stuffing, rolls, punch, dessert and more. The cost of the turkeys have been covered by the rotary club, leaving about $500 in remaining food costs. Seniors, staff, parents (and interested alum) will prepare and serve the feast. You can help our school by donating the food items directly or by sending a tax deductible contribution to: Encina High School c/o Senior Guides Program 1400 Bell Street Sacramento, CA 95825 If you would like to donate food, tableware or other items, please call or email, so I can coordinate. Additionally you are welcome to attend the feast, help cook or serve, or just enjoy the dinner. If you plan to come, please RSVP to spalmer@innotek.com. THE CHALLENGE... I am committing the class of 74 to $150 toward the feast and know my classmates will support me in this effort. I hear about other classes with spirit (61, 73, 75, 78, 81, 85, 86, 91, ...). Who will join the GREAT class of 74 to help the class of '04 have a great holiday dinner!! Call or email a few friends a pull your class together. Thanks in advance from Encina kids and staff. Steve Palmer '74 530-676-2775 I encourage Encina alumni to support the Senior Guides program and contribute generously! ENCINA BASKETBALL Eric Mandell 71 wrote that Encina's basketball team was ranked 9th in the Sacramento Bee. Go Encina! "High School Basketball Rankings (Published Dec. 5, 2000) Rankings by Joe Davidson, Bee Staff Writer. BOYS 1. Jesuit (3-0) The Marauders went south and beat up on three opponents in winning the Loyola Catholic Tournament behind the play of 6-foot-7 guard Phil Rasmussen, 6-3 forward Cesar Dennis and 6-8 center Maurice Tyree, who is averaging 26 points. 2. Natomas (2-0) The Nighthawks put 106 points on the board against a tough Johnson squad in a 25-point victory. Natomas is loaded with 6-2 guard Brian Videau, 6-5 center David Martin and 6-0 forward Jermai Gibson. 3. Elk Grove (4-0) A 60-59 win by the Thundering Herd over McClatchy in the championship game of the Cartwright Classic zoomed this team from 10th to third. Josh Davis, a 6-4 junior forward, scored with three seconds left for the game-winner. Three seniors -- 5-10 guard Jamin Trost, 6-4 forward Brent Clark and 6-1 reserve forward Scott Landrum -- are playing well. 4. McClatchy (3-1) The Lions would like a rematch with Elk Grove, but played the tournament without standout 5-10 guard Aaron Lawrence, who is nursing an ankle injury. In his absence, 5-10 guard Kenny Caraway, 6-1 forward Sam Luong and 6-4 forward Neaman Miller are doing the job. 5. Rocklin (4-1) The Thunder traveled to Fresno and downed Hoover, Buchanan and Clovis in the Buchanan-Clovis Tournament. However, Rocklin lost the opener to eventual champion Oakland Tech by six. Adam Snyder, a 6-5 junior center who averaged 17.3 points, and 6-1 senior guard Brett Ost led the Thunder. 6. Sheldon (4-0) The Huskies swept the South Lake Tahoe Tournament, downing Douglas of Reno by 21, Johnson by 14 and Atwater by 29. Maurice Miller, a 6-3 junior, scored 65 points in the tournament. He's surrounded by a host of teammates playing well, including 6-4 junior forward Roman Moniak and two guards, 6-1 senior Ian Brown and 6-0 junior Trent Redden. 7. Davis (1-1) After losing the opener to an outstanding Vallejo team, the Blue Devils slipped past Nevada Union 55-54 behind the play of 6-4 forward Joe Chambers, 6-0 guard T.J. Johnson and shooting guard Jordan Crumley. 8. Nevada Union (2-1) The Miners beat Will C. Wood and Vintage but lost a one-point heart-breaker to Davis, despite 18 points from 6-2 senior forward Tyler Madden. Team leader Josh Roenicke, a 6-3 senior guard, and newcomer Spencer Havner are back on board after the Miners' football team lost to Elk Grove in the City Championship game. 9. ENCINA (4-1) The Bulldogs finished second at the McKinleyville Rotary Tipoff but showed they have plenty of talent. Kenny Smith, a 6-3 senior guard, and 6-8 sophomore center Richard Nelson made the all-tournament team. Nelson had 14 points, 17 rebounds, five blocked shots and three dunks and Smith scored 29 points in a 76-65 loss to Arcata. 10. Johnson (4-2) The Warriors ran into buzz saws in Natomas and Sheldon, but that hasn't slowed the play of 6-6 senior center Ashley Smith and two senior forwards, 6-4 Alfonso Davila and 6-5 Kavin Young." HOMECOMING PARTY I received a CD with the three rolls of pictures Rollin Coxe 64 took of the homecoming party. Rollin got some really good shots and there are a lot of new faces who weren't in the pictures I took. I'll be adding these pictures as I have time. Steve Palmer 74 also has more pictures of the festivities. For information about the homecoming party, including pictures: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000.htm If you missed the description of the homecoming party see: http://www.encinahighschool.com/archives/email/001027.txt KELVIN "KC" JONES 75 Dona Lyn Jones 73 wrote: ...my brother Kelvin Cory Jones class of 75 has had a brain tumor removed from the center of his brain it was cancer and he still has another one in the front of his brain. MASCOTS Diane Schoenborn Kelly 73 wrote: "I find it very interesting that the mascot controversy always concerns a non-white mascot. Andrew Carnegie Middle School in the San Juan Unified School District has as its mascot what I can only describe as a "mad Scotsman" --- kilt, bare chest, wild hair and beard, swinging a mace --- on the school message board at the street. Where are the protests over this mascot? I'm sure that there are other "white male" mascots, besides the Vikings, which are not being protested. He was no-non-sense. He just quietly opened his textbook and kept the class moving forward, never looking back. His face still sticks in my mine after 33 years. I'd appreciate it if you could take the time to view the information below. If you think you know of a Marketing Management position or know of any contacts that may be able to assist me in the Sacramento area, please contact me and I can provide further details. During high school I also attended Marconi Technical Center where I earned a certificate in Graphic Design and Printing. I think your web updates are great. Find myself looking at names from the past and doing a lot of woolgathering. Anyway I work for a new car dealership that is unlike most. We sell all General Motors and Chrysler/Dodge vehicles at invoice plus $287. This is way below the window sticker. Its a considerable savings and we have people flying in from all over the country to take advantage. My job is Customer Relations Mgr. so I don't actually get involved in the sales end but would be glad to take e-mails and send quotes for vehicles. I know you don't want to make this column an advertising agency for a car dealership but I would like to offer all Encina Alumni our corporate rate. That would be our regular price minus $387 discount. That works out to $100 under what we paid for it. For example: 2001 Dodge Durango-with leather, trailer tow, R/T Group, 3rd row seat for $31,415.
