This week I received an RSVP from former Encina vice principal Ivory Rubin. In honor of the Olympics, the number of RSVPs by class year are: Gold: class of 73 with 30 rsvps (+0) Silver: class of 86 with 21 rsvps (+0) Bronze: class of 74 with 17 rsvps (+3) Fourth: class of 70 with 16 rsvps (+3) class of 78 with 16 rsvps (+5) class of 85 with 16 rsvps (+0) Fifth: class of 75 with 15 rsvps (+5) Sixth: class of 81 with 12 rsvps The class of 74 moved up into third place, but it's close, very close. The class of 78 and 75 both made a big run this week. Lots of classes in medal territory . If you plan to attend the homecoming party, please RSVP so we can get a better idea of how many people to expect. It appears that a lot of alumni plan to attend but have not RSVPed. This is making it difficult for the reunion committee to make plans. You can rsvp directly to me by replying to this message. Thanks! The homecoming party will cost around $1000 for event insurance, custodians and security. Any contributions towards the costs so that we can keep the party free would be much appreciated. Many thanks to those of you who have contributed towards the homecoming party expenses! This week I received a check from Marla Byerley 76 and Sande Byerley 74 and I am waiting on checks from several alumni who offered to contribute. HOMECOMING PARTY Reunion committee member Tracey Taylor Tolbert 91 wrote this appeal to the class of 91 but it could just as well apply to all classes: "Hello.... My name is Tracy Tolbert(Taylor). I went to Encina High School in 1991. I am writing because I see that not many people are going to the ALL class reunion from 1991. I think there are 4 on the R.S.V.P list. I think it would be really cool to get more people from our class of 1991 to attend. I am coming from Washington State for this reunion. Do you remember the fun times of Encina High School? I do! Rallies, school spirit! And let me tell you we had a lot of school spirit! Right now is the time to show that school spirit and come together for this ALL class reunion. I know those of you that don't live in Sacramento that might be hard and I understand that but what is everyone else's excuse? Where's that good old Apache Pride? Don't you want to know what happened to that old friend? classmate, or even an old boyfriend/girlfriend? Show your true colors and join us at the ALL class reunion. If you need info. please go to http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000.htm All your Questions and be answered, or if you need more info. and can't find it email me and I will do my best to get you the info. that you need! So, Come on all you Apaches!! Have some spirit, show your pride, and join in the fun!" Paul Stewart 76, our float organizer, wrote: "Already got a response with a great idea. I wonder if you can mention in the update that people should be encouraged to wear original clothes if possible. Like the letterman jackets and things you mentioned last year. Or at least have an accessory that tells the era they graduated, a hat, scarve, beeds, purse etc. Yes, it's corny, but people from the early '60s should dress in those fashions while people from the late '60 would of course dress as hippies. The few from the 50s should wear coon skin caps. However, since such a big chunk of the crowd is from the '70s, it would be great if people that wanted to could where polyester/disco leisure suit type clothes in dreadful shades of green for fun and to show the kids how it was before baggy boring clothes. I'm going to the Goodwill to find a leisure suit and I'm digging out my Pooka shells." This will certainly make for some memorable pictures from the evening... I've been told that Encina alumni David Hodo was the original construction worker in the Village People. Anyone know how to locate David? WARNING: Principal Myrtle Berry wrote: "Just wanted to clarify in-outs at football games. You indicated that alumni's could go back and forth. We have a no-return policy (of course unless you are willing to pay again). Once you are in, you are in until the end of the game." Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Event: Pregame party Time: 5pm to 730pm Place: El Camino HS cafeteria Event: Homecoming game/parade Time: 730pm to 930pm Place: El Camino HS stadium Event: Postgame party Time: 930pm to midnight Place: El Camino HS cafeteria I think the the El Camino cafeteria will be a very good location for the homecoming party as you can easily walk back and forth between the homecoming party and the homecoming game in the stadium. In addition, the cafeteria can accomodate up to 700 people (standing) so we should have plenty of room for alumni, staff and their families. Yearbooks: Bring your yearbooks along to look at and laugh about with your old classmates. Nametags: There will be STAFF, COMMITTEE, ALUMNI and PHOTO badges for those who RSVP. If you have a question, ask someone on the reunion committee with a COMMITTEE nametag. Photos: We have several official photographers. If you want your picture taken (individual or group), ask someone with a PHOTO nametag. This is a good way to ensure your presence is recorded for posterity and appears on the website. Classes: We will have class year posters in 5 year increments (1961-65 ... 1995-2000) around the perimeter of the cafeteria. There will be space to print your name and class year on the poster so folks can see who is at the party. This also provides a unofficial record of attendance of sorts. Food: Bring your own food (like a picnic or tailgate), along with a sixpack of NONALCOHOLIC drinks and bag of chips to share. Or wait and buy food at the snack bar at the game. Drinks/Snacks: We will have ice chests, ice, snack bowls along with a few drinks and snacks to get started, but not enough for everyone. Please bring a sixpack of drinks and a bag of chips or the like to share. Remember, this is a free event and the only supplies we have are those DONATED by the folks on the reunion committee. Tables: We will have tables set up in about 1/3 of the cafeteria for those who bring food to eat before the game. The rest of the space will be open to encourage mixing/visiting. For those who don't want to bring food, I encourage you to maximize visiting time by buying something at the snackbar at the game for dinner. Family: Spouses and significant others are welcome. Those of you who are taking your family to the homecoming game are welcome to bring your children to the pregame party but we are not planning any entertainment for children and you should bring something to entertain them. This is first and foremost an alumni event and I neither encourage or discourage children. I felt holding the pregame party at the Candlestick last year discouraged those with children so El Camino is sort of a neutral location. Clothing: Encina clothing is encouraged. Wear your old letter jackets, sweaters, PE shirts or gym shorts (Lucia Churches 73 did this last year). If you can fit into your cheerleader or songleader or mascot costumes even better! Amy Francis 88 wore her songleader costume last year at the game. Security: We will have off duty sheriffs patrolling the event and locking up. No alcohol please. We need to be on our best behaviour if we are to use school facilities for future homecoming parties. HOMECOMING FLOAT Thanks to Lisa Lowe Rodland 79, we have a flatbed trailer for the alumni float! Now we need a convertible or pickup capable of pulling a flatbed trailer... Volunteers? As I said in my earlier message, Paul Stewart 76 and his cohorts need volunteers to participate in and provide costumes for the float. This is a great opportunity for those of you with lots of school spirit bursting to get out to show your stuff. Contact Paul Stewart at pstewart@internow.com if you have costumes or would like to participate in the float in the homecoming parade. Principal Myrtle Berry wrote that the theme of the student floats is "Thru the Ages" and the classes will be as follows: 9th - 60's 10th- 80's 11th- 70's 12th- Renassiance So our 70s theme alumni float will fit right in! Myrtle also wrote: "If anyone has garb/music from any of the above areas, student government would appreciate borrowing it." HOMECOMING RALLY I had a voicemail from Jenace Lane (sp?) from Encina, asking that attendees dress in the costume from their era. Whoa, how old do these kids think we are anyway? Maybe the folks who are going to dress up for the alumni float can attend the rally? Anyway, just thought I would pass this request on to you folks. Dig out your bellbottoms, polyester shirts, nehru jackets and the like... Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Time: 1100 to 1130am Place: Encina HS gym Here are the RSVPs for the homecoming rally: Kathy Cooper Luken 66 James Barbeau 70 Gail Haynes Veri 73 Rett Smart 73 Mike Berry 74 Sande Byerley Jaeke 74 Julie Eissinger Meador 74 Terri Jurich Howard 74 Steve Palmer 74 Scott Palmer 75 Susanne Pierson Currie 75 Marla Byerley 76 Karen Dellinger Nissen 76 Laura Vasquez Lavallee 77 John McManus 81 Jolanne Tierney 81 Janna Snedden Curtis 83 Jinne Horger Webb 90 Angela Kern Mueller 90 Last year the alumni were invited to attend the homecoming rally Friday morning before the game. I attended the rally with Steve Palmer 74, Kathleen Ketcherside 73, John Nunez 74 and Delfino Baeuerlen 96. You can see the pictures here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming99/rally.htm of the school, the rally, the classes, students working on floats, the art gallery and even the senior lawn. We were invited to judge the rally and decide the winning class by Stafford Boyd 88, an Encina teacher, alumni and the activities directory last year. If you are able to attend the rally, I think it would be a great opportunity for alumni visit the campus. The gym was modernized last year and looked great! The students were loud and spirited and the gym was rocking. In the future I hope we are able to hold the homecoming party at Encina. But for now, this is an outstanding opportunity for alumni to visit the campus and see for themselves what Encina and it's students are like today. Please let me know if you plan to attend the homecoming rally. If you attend you need to check in at the front office and I need to provide Encina with the names of the alumni who will be attending the rally. HOMECOMING RSVPS We have about 316 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! Big burst of rsvps and we're over the 300 mark. Note that all current Encina teachers and staff are invited to the homecoming party! Unfortunately, we can not accomodate current students due to our agreement with the administrators. I was curious as to how many folks are travelling to attend the homecoming party. Here's a list of those attending from outside the immediate Sacramento area (which includes Roseville, Granite Bay, Elk Grove, Orangevale, Davis, etc). Otherwise the list would be too long. If I missed you, let me know. Alumni/teachers/staff travelling to the party: Staff Louis Huber - Anchorage,AK John Knurr - Delavan, WI Ginny Privateer Corsi - Boulder, CO Alumni John Whiteline 62 - Puyallup, WA Mike Samoville 64 - Montana? I never imagined we would get so many alumni and staff to travel so far for the homecoming party! Now don't you local folks who have not rsvped feel a little bit lacking in school spirit? Of the recent rsvps... James Barbeau 70 is coming from Alaska! Ken Lambert 70 is coming from Park City, Utah. Brian Stipak 65 is coming from Portland, OR and Alice Stipak 68 is coming from Campbell, CA. Erik Hutton 83, John Jensen 83, and Andrea Howard 83 are all coming from Washington State! Cornelia Whitaker wrote that she was unable to rearrange her travel plans: "I was unable to book another tour time so I will be leaving Oct 12 to Nov 3. As I read the names of people who will be attending - all people whom I admire as educators and who I know made great contibutions to Encina's reputation as an excellent school, I am tempted to chuck the trip. Too late though I would have to forfeit all the fees I have paid." To me, forgoing the internet would be like not having a telephone. Not Everybody Wants Web Access Half of U.S. adults without Internet access have no interest in going online, study finds. by Linda Rosencrance, Computerworld Online September 22, 2000, 10:50 a.m. PT The Pew Internet & American Life Project, a Washington-based research organization that monitors the impact of the Internet on society, Thursday released survey results that it says show half of the adults in the U.S. don't have Internet access and 57 percent of those non-users have no interest in going online. Nearly one-third of the survey respondents who aren't using the Internet now say they definitely don't plan to go online in the future, Pew says. That would translate to a total of about 31 million Americans without Internet access, adds the organization, which surveyed about 12,750 people from March to August. Another 25 percent of the non-users say they probably won't get connected to the Internet, according to Pew. But it notes that most of the strongest Internet holdouts are "aging baby boomers and senior citizens...who are fretful about the online world and often don't believe it can bring them any benefits." On the other hand, Pew says, a "substantial majority" of under-30 survey respondents who don't use the Internet now say they expect to do so in the future. That suggests Internet penetration will eventually reach similar levels as telephones and televisions, the organization adds, although it could take "an extended period of time, perhaps...a generation" to reach that point. In addition, Pew says the survey shows that Internet users want to know what Web sites do with their personal information, before they do it. For example, 86 percent of the Internet users who responded to the survey say they favor "opt-in" policies requiring companies to get permission from users before any of their personal information is shared with third parties. More than 90 percent of the respondents say companies should be punished for violating their own data privacy policies, according to the Pew report. Meanwhile, 81 percent say there should be rules that govern how online businesses can track the Internet activities of visitors to their Web sites. On the other hand, 56 percent of the respondents say they didn't know that Web sites and online advertisers can track user activity by placing "cookies" on their computer hard drives.
