Sent: Friday, September 22, 2000 1:27 PM Subject: [Encina Update] Encina Update (virus/story/fundraiser/homecoming/yearbook/float/rally/rsvps/siblings/classes/deaths/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week's update is sponsored by Linda Weatherford Ballance 62. In honor of the Olympics, the number of RSVPs by class year are: Gold: class of 73 with 30 rsvps (+1) Silver: class of 86 with 21 rsvps (+5) Bronze: class of 85 with 16 rsvps (+1) Fourth: class of 74 with 14 rsvps (+4) Fitfth: class of 70 with 13 rsvps (+1) Sixth: tie between class of 78 (+2) and 81 +1) with 11 rsvps Seventh: class of 75 with 10 rsvps The class of 86 made a run this week with 5 rsvps and the class of 74 vaulted into fourth place, overtaking numerous classes this week with 4 additional rsvps. If you plan to attend the homecoming party, please RSVP so we can get a better idea of how many people to expect. It appears that a lot of alumni plan to attend but have not RSVPed. This is making it difficult for the reunion committee to make plans. You can rsvp directly to me by replying to this message. Thanks! We will be sending out printed invitations to the Encina teachers and staff for whom we have mailing addresses. If you know how to contact any Encina teachers and staff, please write. Even if you only know the school where they are teaching, we can send the invitation to the school. Note that we will not be sending out invitations to alumni, there are too many! We are still in need of a flatbed trailer for the alumni float for the homecoming parade... VIRUS Several of you wrote saying that my email contained a virus/worm. It appears that egroups.com, where I maintain the Encina mailing lists, attached ad banners which either contained a virus/worm or appeared to do so. I've notified them. Sorry for any inconvenience. You will also have noticed that egroups has moved their ad banners from the bottom to the top of the mail. All I can say is, the service is free. It costs $5/month per group to have ad-free group mail. FUNNY STORY Donna McManus 74 wrote: My baby girl, a high school freshman, asks if she can go to homecoming at Del Oro. I tell her I will think about bending the rules about her not dating until she is 16. (like I really think I can keep her locked up that long!) Her perfectly logical retort, "But Mom, YOU'RE going to homecoming!" My answer, just as logical, "Yea, but I am not a freshman who looks like a senior. I'm a senior who wants to look at the fresh men!" Donna's solution was to bring her daughter to the Encina homecoming! FUNDRAISER Last chance to order your Encina alumni hat! The deadline is September 25th. As of yesterday, Coach Durkee had received 7-8 hat orders. This is sad, very sad... I received this email from Coach Durkee last Wednesday: "Harlan- We have had two orders for hats and one very generous donation. I would like to extend the date for hat orders until the 25th of September. Due to the talent on our squad this year (and beating Mira Loma 44-7), many athletes who have never played football are trying out. Also, I have had the opportunity to recruit many freshman from my geography courses for the JV team. Thus, we have had to spend additional money on equipment and helmets to meet our needs. I would like to give the fundraiser additional time to try and sell more hats. The rallies begin at 11 am at Encina and end at 11:30. I look forward to seeing you there. The party sounds great and the players are VERY EXCITED to have so many alumni coming to the game. It will be by far the largest crowd any of these boys will have ever played in front of in football. Thank you! Coach Durkee" Here are the particulars should you wish to order: "Dear Alumni- We would like to inform you of our 2000 football fundraiser. I have made arrangements with a sporting goods vendor to order the necessary hats. They will be white with a cardinal bill and eyelet's, with Encina Alumni in gold block letters, surrounding a football. The hats will be adjustable, so one size will fit all. The price of the hats will be $20, with $10 paying for the hat and $10 going to the football program. Any additional donations would be highly appreciated, and if you do not desire a hat, any donation would be welcome. We have many costs during the season which include safety checks of all equipment, doctors at games, bus rides to away games, new equipment, ect. Unfortunately in many cases, the parents of our players and students are not in a financial position to donate funds. As in many years past, Coach Hibbard has generously spent countless dollars of his own money on many of the things our program has needed. I would like to stress how much the coaching staff at Encina would appreciate any hat orders or donations to our program. Thank You! Now for the facts- please mail your checks to Encina High School, c/o Varsity Football, 1400 Bell St., Sacramento, CA 95825. I will place the order on the 15th of September for as many hats as are needed. When they arrive I will put a note on the website. You may get the hats in three ways; 1) pick it up from Encina yourself, 2) send a self-addressed envelope with postage and we will mail it to you when the hats arrive, or 3) they will be available to alumni at the party before the homecoming game. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call 971-7557 and ask for Coach Durkee or Coach Hibbard. Once again, thank you for your support of the Encina Football Program. Coach Durkee" HOMECOMING PARTY Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Event: Pregame party Time: 5pm to 730pm Place: El Camino HS cafeteria Event: Homecoming game/parade Time: 730pm to 930pm Place: El Camino HS stadium Event: Postgame party Time: 930pm to midnight Place: El Camino HS cafeteria I think the the El Camino cafeteria will be a very good location for the homecoming party as you can easily walk back and forth between the homecoming party and the homecoming game in the stadium. In addition, the cafeteria can accomodate up to 700 people (standing) so we should have plenty of room for alumni, staff and their families. Nametags: There will be STAFF, COMMITTEE, ALUMNI and PHOTO badges for those who RSVP. If you have a question, ask someone on the reunion committee with a COMMITTEE nametag. Photos: We have several official photographers. If you want your picture taken (individual or group), ask someone with a PHOTO nametag. This is a good way to ensure your presence is recorded for posterity and appears on the website. Classes: We will have class year posters in 5 year increments (1961-65 ... 1995-2000) around the perimeter of the cafeteria. There will be space to print your name and class year on the poster so folks can see who is at the party. This also provides a unofficial record of attendance of sorts. Food: Bring your own food (like a picnic or tailgate), along with a sixpack of NONALCOHOLIC drinks and bag of chips to share. Or wait and buy food at the snack bar at the game. Drinks/Snacks: We will have ice chests, ice, snack bowls along with a few drinks and snacks to get started, but not enough for everyone. Please bring a sixpack of drinks and a bag of chips or the like to share. Remember, this is a free event and the only supplies we have are those DONATED by the folks on the reunion committee. Tables: We will have tables set up in about 1/3 of the cafeteria for those who bring food to eat before the game. The rest of the space will be open to encourage mixing/visiting. For those who don't want to bring food, I encourage you to maximize visiting time by buying something at the snackbar at the game for dinner. Family: Spouses and significant others are welcome. Those of you who are taking your family to the homecoming game are welcome to bring your children to the pregame party but we are not planning any entertainment for children and you should bring something to entertain them. This is first and foremost an alumni event and I neither encourage or discourage children. I felt holding the pregame party at the Candlestick last year discouraged those with children so El Camino is sort of a neutral location. Clothing: Encina clothing is encouraged. Wear your old letter jackets, sweaters, PE shirts or gym shorts (Lucia Churches 73 did this last year). If you can fit into your cheerleader or songleader or mascot costumes even better! Amy Francis 88 wore her songleader costume last year at the game. Security: We will have off duty sheriffs patrolling the event and locking up. No alcohol please. We need to be on our best behaviour if we are to use school facilities for future homecoming parties. I am still waiting for quotes on liability insurance for the homecoming party but it appears it will cost about $500. When the costs for security and custodian are added, the cost of the homecoming party will be about $1000. Many thanks to those of you who have contributed towards the homecoming party expenses! YEARBOOK And speaking of expenses... Kathy Schroeder Hansen 73 wrote: I have an untouched, unscathed, "never been kissed", virgin copy of the 1973 year book. Of course it has 73, 74, 75 and 76 alumni. It was an extra I picked up for a classmate but then, alas, we never touched base. It still has the plastic protective cover. It even sounds like a new book when you open it. I say we auction this thing and the proceeds go to paying the insurance, etc. Does this sound feasible (or at least fun??) Come on, class of 73. Let's show them who's boss. Kathy (Schroeder) Hansen 73 I'll start the bidding at $50 myself... HOMECOMING FLOAT We are still in need of a flatbed trailer for the float... Paul Stewart 76 and a few other Encina alumni would like to put together a float for this year's homecoming parade. In order to implement their idea, they need to borrow a flat bed which is available the weekend before the homecoming party (October 13th). Paul said he talked with an alumni at last year's party who had a flat bed but couldn't remember his name. If you can help with the flat bed or would just like to help Paul work on the float, let me know. HOMECOMING RALLY It looks like we'll have a pretty good group of alumni at the homecoming rally. Lots of RSVPs this week. You should really go if you can make it. It's almost as much fun as the homecoming parade. It'll get your juices going and bring back those memories from rallies in years gone by. Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Time: 1100 to 1130am Place: Encina HS gym Here are the RSVPs so far: Kathy Cooper Luken 66 Gail Haynes Veri 73 (from Utah) Rett Smart 73 Mike Berry 74 Sande Byerley Jaeke 74 Steve Palmer 74 Terri Jurich Howard 74 Marla Byerley 76 Karen Dellinger Nissen 76 Laura Vasquez Lavallee 77 Jolanne Tierney 81 Janna Snedden Curtis 83 Jinne Horger Webb 90 Angela Kern Mueller 90 Last year the alumni were invited to attend the homecoming rally Friday morning before the game. I attended the rally with Steve Palmer 74, Kathleen Ketcherside 73, John Nunez 74 and Delfino Baeuerlen 96. You can see the pictures here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming99/rally.htm of the school, the rally, the classes, students working on floats, the art gallery and even the senior lawn. We were invited to judge the rally and decide the winning class by Stafford Boyd 88, an Encina teacher, alumni and the activities directory last year. If you are able to attend the rally, I think it would be a great opportunity for alumni visit the campus. The gym was modernized last year and looked great! The students were loud and spirited and the gym was rocking. In the future I hope we are able to hold the homecoming party at Encina. But for now, this is an outstanding opportunity for alumni to visit the campus and see for themselves what Encina and it's students are like today. Please let me know if you plan to attend the homecoming rally. If you attend you need to check in at the front office and I need to provide Encina with the names of the alumni who will be attending the rally. HOMECOMING RSVPS We have about 284 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! Note that all current Encina teachers and staff are invited to the homecoming party! Unfortunately, we can not accomodate current students due to our agreement with the administrators. Encina secretary Pam Sparrow Perreault lives in Las Vegas now: "Hi Harlan - am very much trying to make plans to attend - it sounds like such a special occasion - and did you know I graduated from El Camino? - so I will get a "double" out of the location, football field, etc - my class from El Camino is having its 40th reunion the weekend before - a picnic/barbeque - think it's at Carmichael Park (not sure) - don't think I can attend both, though - so will try for Encina's" Encina teacher Sandy Hunt wrote: "I am working on being there." Gail Haynes Veri 73 will be coming from Utah for the rally and homecoming party! Julie Eissinger Meadow 74 had a good excuse: "Actually I would love to come to the Homecoming Game, but unfortunately, my daughter goes to Folsom High School, and their Homecoming game is on the same night. The senior float is being built at our house, and we are in charge of getting the float to the pre-game festivities in Folsom. I am planning on attending the Encina post-game event...if the timing works out!" Later Julie wrote: Harlan........put me down.....I can't stand this!!!! Somehow.......at sometime during the evening.......I WILL BE THERE!!!! Besides Beki Keeler Beane, we have Tamera Holmen Stewart: My name is Tamera Stewart and at Encina was known as Tamera Holmen, I have a bit of free time and could help with the 10 year reunion. I am contact with a few people and could work even harder to find more. What a wonderful challenge that would be. If you have a few names already could you please pass those on to me? I live in Citrus Heights, CA and I understand many people have moved away as I did, and some have moved back just the same. For so many years I was not even sure that Encina would have a reunion for our class and it would be a shame if it turned out that way. I am a very possitive person and I know there are more people out there like Beki and myself. :) Lets have a show of hands!?!?! :) I know if we work together we will have an amazing turn out!!! We are all going through life as it continues to present itself to us and this is one of the happy moments! This is an important event, our TEN YEAR REUNION will only happen ONCE (with the combined efforts of many people!) It is not a small task and I am sure we won't have to do this ourselves. To all the other classes of Encina if you have any suggestions please come forward, I am not afraid to ask for help!!!!! :) Please count me in! Write to my email with any comments or questions, suggestions or just encouragement!! : evolvingartist@yahoo.com Have a wonderful day! and Julie Fandrich Hernandez: I will also like to volunteer to help. Im sure I can talk Kim Smith into volunteering also. I do travel quite often, but I would love to help as much as possible. Just let me know what you need. I currently live in Antelope but am moving to the Natomas area. and Melissa Smith: I would love to volunteer to help, but not chair the reunion. I am getting married in December and working a lot of hours and studying for exams, but I would still love to help out when I can. Just let me know. That should be enough to get started! Often, the committee has to tell the hotel or caterers how many will attend well in advance. For this reason I advocate early bird discounts for early RSVPs. Anway, if you are planning to attend the 70, 80 or 90 reunions in October and haven't RSVPed, please do so. Your reunion committees are anxiously awaiting your RSVP. And many thanks to the unsung alumni on the reunion committee who are volunteering both their time and money to make the homecoming party a success!
