However, we need help obtaining insurance. Please read the following section on the homecoming party to see if you can help! This week I received an RSVP from Encina's first principal Jim Smith. *** HOMECOMING PARTY - IMPORTANT *** Many thanks for all of you who wrote with suggestions about finding a new home for the homeless homecoming party. The Encina alumni continue to amaze me with their resourcefulness. I'm glad to announce that the homecoming party is no longer homeless. We have been successful in obtaining permission from El Camino HS to use their cafeteria as the site of the Homecoming party on Friday, October 20th from 5pm to 9pm! I would like to thank Lynne Gile Tracy 78 and Myrtle Berry for their help expediting things at El Camino. Encina principal Myrtle Berry and I both asked Lynne, who is a vice principal at El Camino, to help us obtain permission from Tom Irwin, the vice principal at El Camino responsible for facilities. I think the the El Camino cafeteria will be a very good location for the homecoming party as you can easily walk back and forth between the homecoming party and the homecoming game in the stadium. In addition, the cafeteria can accomodate up to 700 people (standing) so we should have plenty of room for alumni, staff and their families. Unfortunately, we only have permission to use the cafeteria until 9pm so we may have to find another home for the postgame party. We are trying to get the hours extended to midnight. Our use of the cafeteria is dependent on providing security, a custodian, but most important, we need to submit a certificate of insurance with the facilities use form. Evidentally you can obtain this type of "event" insurance from some insurance brokers. According to Myra Salazar, who issues the facilities use permits for San Juan, we must provide: 1. a certificate of insurance for general liability for $1M 2. San Juan Unified School District must be "addition insured" 3. San Juan Unified School District must be the certificate holder 4. a separate sheet of paper which states that San Juan Unified School District is "addition insured" Bonnie McFarland Kaplan 66 has obtained one quote for about $500 from her agent Chuck Argentine. Chris Moser Taylor 78 is also having her agent check on insurance. I had no idea it would be so expensive! If you have any insurance broker contacts, please contact them and ask about a quote for insurance as described above. The broker can contact Myra Salazar at 916-971-7008 if they have specific insurance questions. We must also provide two off duty sheriff deputies ($200 for 4 hours) and one custodian ($120 for 6 hours). The open issues I see are: 1. need certificate of insurance 2. postgame party 3. funds for homecoming party expenses Assuming the homecoming party is from 5 to 9pm, we are looking at upfront costs of about $800-900 for the evening. If we get permission to extend the hours, the cost will be about $1000. I would like to keep the event free if possible, especially for the teachers and staff. I would like to know whether alumni are willing to donate sufficient funds to cover the expenses so that we do not have to charge admission. I will be glad to contribute myself in order to keep the event free of charge. Please write if you are willing to help... One of the drawbacks of having the homecoming party on campus is that alcohol is prohibited. We will have two off duty sheriffs providing security at the party and intoxicated folks will be asked to leave. We are on probation here and need to be on our best behavior. Regarding the postgame party, Barbara Githens 77, principal of the Whitney Elementary School a few blocks from El Camino, has offered the use of her facility for the homecoming party. Barbara is checking into what permissions we would need to use the Whitney School. This is one potential option for the postgame party. Another is to reconvene at a nearby latenight spot. We had a class of 73 reunion party at Sudwerk across from Cal Expo. This is a large facility which could accomodate quite a few folks. And there's always the Candlerock, which we used last year. Please write if you have any suggestions! *** But number one, if you know of an insurance broker who can provide the type of event insurance we need, please contact them or send me their name and number *** FUNDRAISER Please place your orders now as the order will be placed on September 15th! From Coach Tom Durkee: Dear Alumni- We would like to inform you of our 2000 football fundraiser. I have made arrangements with a sporting goods vendor to order the necessary hats. They will be white with a cardinal bill and eyelet's, with Encina Alumni in gold block letters, surrounding a football. The hats will be adjustable, so one size will fit all. The price of the hats will be $20, with $10 paying for the hat and $10 going to the football program. Any additional donations would be highly appreciated, and if you do not desire a hat, any donation would be welcome. We have many costs during the season which include safety checks of all equipment, doctors at games, bus rides to away games, new equipment, ect. Unfortunately in many cases, the parents of our players and students are not in a financial position to donate funds. As in many years past, Coach Hibbard has generously spent countless dollars of his own money on many of the things our program has needed. I would like to stress how much the coaching staff at Encina would appreciate any hat orders or donations to our program. Thank You! Now for the facts- please mail your checks to Encina High School, c/o Varsity Football, 1400 Bell St., Sacramento, CA 95825. I will place the order on the 15th of September for as many hats as are needed. When they arrive I will put a note on the website. You may get the hats in three ways; 1) pick it up from Encina yourself, 2) send a self-addressed envelope with postage and we will mail it to you when the hats arrive, or 3) they will be available to alumni at the party before the homecoming game. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call 971-7557 and ask for Coach Durkee or Coach Hibbard. Once again, thank you for your support of the Encina Football Program. Coach Durkee CHEERLEADERS Come now, we must have some ex-cheerleaders or songleaders or mascots who are willing to coordinate this effort to raise funds for the cheerleaders... I received this email from Nisha Browne '02, an Encina cheerleader: "I have not graduated yet but the reason I am writing to you is because the Encina Varsity Cheerleaders needs a sponsor so can get our uniforms" HOMECOMING RSVPS We have about 253 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! Former principal Jim Smith wrote: "Looking forward to meeting you on Oct. 20. Best of luck with the reunion/homecoming arrangements." Beki Keeler has been acting as informal reunion contact for the class of 91. However, Beki wrote: "I have made a few contacts, but due to the fact that I only attended Encina my junior and senior year, I do not know a lot of people and I only lived in Sac for a total of 3 years. I currently live in Washington state and I am finding it difficult to make the conections that I need to proceed with the class of 1991 10 year reunion. If there is anyone in Sacramento area that would be willing to head this thing up that would be great. I would love to help in whatever way possible, but because of the distance I feel that I would not be able to do this thing justice." Please write if you would be interesting in chairing the reunion committee or are just interesting in helping plan the reunion. I BELIEVE MY MOTHER JUST WANTED HER CHILDREN, ALL OF HER CHILDREN TO HAVE DIGNITY, AND TO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES. SHE WAS TOUGH, AND A TOUGH MOTHER AS WELL. I NEVER QUESTIONED HER AUTHORITY, VERY FEW DID, MORE THAN ONCE. SHE IS GONE NOW, VERY SUDDEN, BUT WITH THE SAME SENSE OF AUTHORITY, DIGNITY AND STRENGTH YOU MIGHT EXPECT FROM BETTE SANFORD. I am definitely in favor of alumni obtaining stable email addresses as I spend a lot of time updating email addresses in the class directories and on the mailing lists! Internet Users Find Relief With Lifetime Addresses By Julia Angwin IN THE TELEPHONE INDUSTRY, you can switch carriers every month without ever changing your phone number. And if you move, most phone companies provide a recording with your forwarding phone number for several months. Even the U.S. Postal Service offers mail forwarding for six months free of charge. Not so online. Most Internet service providers -- whether they are giants like America Online or employers like American Express -- require you to change your e-mail address when you switch providers or jobs. Very few offer any sort of forwarding options. E-mails addressed to defunct addresses simply are returned to sender with the unfriendly error message: "address unknown." To avoid that, most people send mass e-mails to friends and colleagues every time they make a change. It's an onerous task. It's also one of the biggest obstacles to competition among Internet service providers, or ISPs, giving established players like AOL and EarthLink a tremendous edge over new competitors, even ones that offer free access. Economists call that sort of hassle a "switching cost." Companies covet high switching costs -- it means they can lock in customers for a long time. Any solution to the e-mail problem, then, could make it easier for consumers to switch, and eventually spur competition and drive down prices -- as it has in the phone industry. The problem for providers is that e-mail portability is not an easy technological feat. Addresses are built with the part to the right of the "@" sign telling the computer which electronic post office should get your message. When you switch ISPs, you're effectively moving into a new post office. The only way to get e-mail from the old address is to have it forwarded. FOR A SENSE OF the consumers' predicament, consider Andy Rebele, an Internet entrepreneur who lives in Seattle. When he left his position as manager of Internet business development at General Magic in 1996, he sent out a mass mailing to all his wired friends with his new e-mail address. Ninety days later, he had to e-mail them all again after he walked out of a job at Interactive Imaginations, a start-up now part of 24/7 Media Inc. "I was afraid I would forget a couple of people and they wouldn't be able to reach me by e-mail again," Mr. Rebele says. So in 1997 he signed up for a free lifetime e-mail address being offered by his alma mater, the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has been reachable at that address ever since -- because MIT forwards his e-mail to whatever e-mail address he gives them. MIT does not store any of his e-mail on its servers so he still must buy Internet service from a provider. Every time Mr. Rebele switches jobs or Internet service providers -- which he estimates has occurred 11 times since then -- he logs onto the MIT Web site and enters his new e-mail address. All messages sent to his MIT address are automatically forwarded to whichever e-mail address he has entered into the system. Lifetime e-mail addresses are becoming more common. First offered by elite business schools such as Harvard, MIT and Wharton in 1997, they are now popping up on college campuses across the country. Students like it because they can keep in touch with their friends after they graduate; schools see it as a good way to keep in touch with graduates -- potential donors. Internet start-ups such as Pobox.com and Mail.com are also trying to tap this market with offers ranging from free forwarding to charging $40 per year. Many of the free ones support themselves by selling ads. Fanmail.com offers free e-mail addresses for sports fans who want addresses such as ones ending in @Wildcats.com or @Go-Tigers.com. The firm, based in Huntsville, Ala., supports itself by e-mailing advertisements to its subscribers and through advertising on its Web page. YAHOO! OFFERS free e-mail and forwarding. The Internet domain registries, such as NetworkSolutions.com and Register.com, also sell forwarding services -- for a fee of about $30 -- to anyone who buys a domain name. For example, if you buy Yourname.com, you can have e-mails sent to you@yourname.com. The U.S. Postal Service also is planning to offer free lifetime e-mail addresses with forwarding capabilities. These options represent a threat to ISPs, whose businesses are built in part on the premise that customers are loath to switch e-mail addresses. It was exactly that type of thinking, during the deregulation of local phone service, that prompted Congress in 1996 to mandate that local phone companies must allow customers to keep their phone number regardless of what carrier they use. "They knew competition would be dead on arrival without number portability," says Scott Cleland, chief executive of Precursor Group, a Washington, D.C., research firm. Local phone companies started charging a "number portability" fee of 46 cents to $1 per month to cover the cost of letting customers keep their phone numbers. Customers pay whether they switch or not. So why hasn't anyone demanded that big ISPs offer forwarding services? "If there were anything like number portability for e-mail," says Reed Hundt, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, "then AOL would not be emerging as the dominant holder of market power." Tom Weber is on vacation.
