Sorry to those of you who wondered where I was...and why I didn't respond. HOMECOMING 2000 Principal Myrtle Berry wrote that the Homecoming Game will be Friday, October 27, 2000, against Golden Sierra at El Camino HS. http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000.htm Please note the change from previous messages about Homecoming 2000, which said the game would be September 29 or 30, 2000. Mark this date on your calendars! I received RSVPs in the last week from: Chuck Long 65 Leslie Cameron Silva 65 Margie Hyland 73 Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 Jinne Webb Horger 90 Come on folks, I want to hear from more of you! http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming_form.htm If you plan to come this year, please RSVP. I think by starting early and getting lots of signups from the various classes early on, we can double last year's attendance. This year, we even plan to build our own float and have several volunteers raring to go. I would like to get more participation from other classes this year. Last year the classes with the best turn out were those who had a few energetic folks who called up their friends and spread the word. So sign up and get your friends to sign up. The more people who sign up, the more classmates will be drawn in once we have critical mass. I'll keep the RSVP list on the Homecoming 2000 page up to date so you can check and see who's going. I look forward to seeing you at the Homecoming 2000 party this fall! ALUMNI PARTY Stephanie Dugas 73 was good enough to scan and email me the pictures she took at the Alumni party at Mandango's. I've added the pictures to the Alumni party 2000 page here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/alumni2000/party.htm I've identified the folks Steph or I recognized. If you can help identify anyone please send me a note with the number of the picture and the names of the folks you recognize. Thanks Steph! Amazingly enough, there was a couple from the class of 69 who were at Mandango's because their daughter happens to work there. They were surprised to end up in the middle of an Encina alumni party! REUNIONS 1963 REUNION I heard from Bonnie McFarland Kaplan 63 this week. The reunion committee contacts are: Bonnie (McFarland) Kaplan (916)383-8794 or e-mail BJKAPL@AOL.COM Bill Beohm (916) 481-3667 or e-mail BEOHM@JPS.NET It's always great to locate reunion committee members for a class! 1965 REUNION Chuck Long wrote that the reunion committee met last Wednesday (3/22) at George Hullin's house and set a tentative date for the 35 year reunion: evening of August 19, 2000. The reunion committee is meeting again tonight (3/30) to nail down more details. Barbara McKee Craig 65 called me this week to ask whether it was okay to give out the Encina website address in radio spots about the 65 class reunion. No problem! The more publicity the website gets, the better. 1970 REUNION No news from the reunion committee... If you are interested in attending or helping with the 30 year reunion, please contact Pamela Deason Thomas at egishome@aol.com 1974 REUNION Terri Jurich Howard 74 wrote: You can also note in your next report that even though it is not a "Reunion" year for Class of '74 we are alive and partying on in true Apache form!!! We have met numerous times for social functions, dinners and such. Most have been hosted by Julie Eisinger Meador at her lovely home in Folsom. Bob (the Goosman) is still trying to be BOSS but we have overruled him on many things!!! (Which is why he is still single and having a singles only function this Saturday to find the perfect mate)!!!! 1975 REUNION Where: Sutter Club When: Saturday, July 15, 2000 Contact Jenny Bender Bittner at jedb@pacbell.net 1980 REUNION The reunion committee met on March 28 and Richard Stoffel sent out a long message to the class mailing list covering the agenda in detail. If you are not on the class mailing list and would like to be, let me know. The next reunion committee meeting will be on April 11th. 1981 REUNION Chair Melissa Tovar wrote: Please mark your calendars for August 11, 2001. This is a Saturday. The reunion will be held at Arden Hills Country Club and we have contracted with Class Encounters to assist in the coordination of our very special event. We will be having a meeting on Tuesday, May 9 at Laura Storm's (Wiemer) house. Please feel free to contact either one of us for additional information. Melissa Tovar (916)349-0137 Melissatovar@aol.com 1985 REUNION No news regarding the elusive Melinda Cope 85. Do we have any other reunion committee members present? Send email to encina1985@egroups.com if you are interesting in attending and/or helping organize the 15 year reunion. 1990 REUNION If you are interested in helping or attending the 10 year reunion this year please contact Denyce at tiniegrrl@Aol.com 1995 REUNION Do we have anyone from the reunion committee on the mailing list? Please write encina1995@egroups.com if you're interesting in attending and/or helping to organize the 5 year reunion. UPDATE PROBLEMS Last week David Dahlberg 77 wrote that he cannot read the updates with his compuserve email software (similar to AOL), because the MIME encoding is undecipherable. He's been reading the archived updates on the Encina website to get around this problem. I am using Outlook Express 5 to send the updates as plain text messages. They are sent in MIME format and I have text encoding set to "none". However, egroups converts messages to html format by default so it can add those little ads at the bottom. This could also be part of the problem. If you can read messages I've sent you directly, but cannot read messages forwarded by egroups (that is, the updates and class mailing list), then egroups is probably the problem. If this is the case, egroups allows me to disable conversion to html for individual recipients. Let me know if you are having problems reading the Encina Update or mail from your class mailing list. SIBLINGS Occasionally I hear from an alumni for whom I'm already in contact with their sibling. But curiously enough, they didn't hear about the Encina website from their sibling, but from a THIRD party. For those of you who have siblings who attended Encina and haven't gotten around to telling them about it, please take a moment and email or call or write. Or at least tell me who your siblings are so I can add them to the appropriate class directory and refer inquiries to you. Who knows who might be looking for them? Or whether they might be missing out on their class reunion. Telling me about your siblings and friends is a great way to expand the class directories! For example -- James Deyo 79 is in contact with: Carl Fong 79 Steve Fong 78 Dolores Hotchkiss 62 is in contact with Pamela McNabb Swanson 62. PATRICIA BRANCH 64 I thought I would share Patricia Branch Neumann 64's bio with you all. Please take the time to read and reflect upon her words... Bio: My biography is not as exciting , exotic, or glamorous as some of those I have read from other Encinians, but I've still had a very full and enjoyable life. A year after graduating from Encina, I met my future husband on a blind double date. We were married the following May. We will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary this year. After my husband got out of the Air Force in 1971, we moved to southern California, where we have raised our family. We have two wonderful children and five lively grandchildren, ranging in age from 11 years to 3 months. Our son is currently stationed at McChord AFB, Tacoma, WA. Our daughter lives in Southern California. Our granddaughter, 8 yrs. old, is heart transplant #131. She received her new heart three weeks after she was born in April of 1992. My husband, Conrad, is writing this for me since I am unable to do so. I was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease in 1995 and currently reside in a Skilled Nursing Facility. My wish to you is this; If you don't have a favorite charity, please consider the Alzheimer's Association, and contribute generously. This disease has robbed me of my ability to watch my grandchildren grow, and to grow old with my husband. My hope is that a cure is found soon. God bless all of you, and enjoy each day you have with your family and friends, as if it your last. You never know when it will be. EBS A while back we had some discussion about how the Encina Tomahawk school newspaper was replaced by EBS, the Encina Broadcast System. Bill Farley 77 was one of the students who started EBS under LaVerne Gonzales. Bill wrote: "It's been 25 years and all I'm sure of is that we (Spencer Burke) and I did it to avoid real classes. As I type this it is starting to come back to me. Spencer and I were active in photography and started making films. Gonzales did the Senior film every year so all of that equipment was accessible to us. When video tape came out, I believe Gonzales started using that for basketball in 1975 - I remember getting Jim Burke to do the play by play. I think from that we launched into the EBS show. Lindquist, the librarian bought some equipment as well and it took off. I remember Spencer doing some of the early 60 seconds bits as a knock off on 60 minutes. I also remember installing all of those TVs in the English rooms for our 5-10 minute segment. The next year (76) we had two crews - Spencer had one and I had the other. The next (77) year another group took over from us. As I mentioned in our bio, Gonzales let Spencer and I get english credits for writing scripts for EBS. We discovered that he was accredited for teaching english and pursuaded him to give two academic weaklings a break. I'll try to remember more over the next few weeks." SMALL WORLD Steve Picanco 78 wrote: This past weekend I was kicking back with two of my kids watching the L.A. Lakers play the Sacramento Kings at Arco Arena on NBC. During the game a little scuffle broke out among some of the players. After things got straightened out on the court, one of the officials went to an official on the sideline. NBC captured this little discussion between the two officials. But, WHO was that official on the sideline?? Our very own, Kim Tierney!!! I told my kids, I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH HIM!!! They said, sure, Dad!! I said, NO, I REALLY DID!!! They said, Dad, he looks too young to have gone to school with you!! Oh, I said, good point!! :-( YEARBOOKS This week I heard from Rollin Coxe 64, who is going to loan me his 1961-64 yearbooks! Thank you Rollin! This reminds me that I still have Jon Dahlberg 71's 1968-69 yearbooks, which I haven't had time to scan in yet so I can return them. Don't worry Jon, I haven't forgotten. I bought a new, faster scanner for Christmas so hopefully I can get to this soon. My LONG term plan is to someday have all the yearbooks online, but this is a LONG term project. Just imagine 40 yearbooks times 200 pages a piece... STORE Last week I wrote that I ordered a Honda minivan from carorder.com. However the backlog is so great I wasn't guaranteed delivery until October 25. Several alumni wrote, including Steve Palmer 74, who is also looking for a Honda minivan, and told me that I should check out dealers in the Sacramento area. Thanks to Steve, I've ordered a Honda Odyssey from Auburn Honda which should arrive in June in time for our driving vacation to the Grand Canyon. Thanks Steve! So much for this experiment buying a car on the internet. I think it works best when it's a vehicle which is not in short supply. But at least I got a free shirt from carorder.com...
